peach Salsa & Peach recall: Listeria Risk in Illinois & 9 Other States – What You Need to Know
A voluntary recall has been issued for peach salsa and individual peaches due to potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination. This impacts consumers in Illinois, and also nine other states, and prompts a check of your refrigerators. Here’s a complete guide to understanding the recall, the risks, and what steps you should take.
What Products Are Affected?
The recall, initiated by supplier Moonlight Companies, affects peach salsa sold under two brand names:
* Snowfruit Peach Salsa
* Supreme Produce Peach Salsa
These salsas were sold in clear, plastic “grab-and-go” containers, typically 14 or 16 ounces in size. Look for a “sell by” date of October 29th or October 30th on the packaging.
The affected products were distributed to Kroger retail stores, including Mariano’s locations in:
* Illinois
* Colorado
* Georgia
* Washington
* Indiana
* Mississippi
* Tennessee
* Arizona
* Oregon
* Michigan
Beyond Salsa: Individual Peach Recall
The issue extends beyond the salsa itself.The white and yellow flesh peaches used in the salsa are also under recall. These peaches were sold individually and in packs nationwide.
Specifically, check for peaches with PLU stickers labeled “Washington” and/or “Organic.”
Why the Recall? Understanding Listeria monocytogenes
Listeria monocytogenes is a serious bacterium that can cause a condition called listeriosis. While the FDA states the recalled products are no longer on store shelves, the concern is that you may still have them in your home.
Who is at Risk?
Listeriosis poses the greatest risk to:
* Young children
* The elderly
* Individuals with weakened immune systems
* Pregnant women
Symptoms of Listeriosis
Symptoms can vary, but commonly include:
* High fever
* Severe headache
* Stiffness
* Nausea
* Abdominal pain
* Diarrhea
For pregnant women, a Listeria infection can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, or serious illness in the newborn. Even healthy individuals may experience temporary discomfort.
What should You Do?
If you have purchased either the recalled peach salsa or the potentially contaminated peaches, follow these steps:
- Check Your Refrigerator: Immediately examine your refrigerator for the affected products.
- Discard Immediately: If you find any of the recalled items, discard them immediately. Do not taste or attempt to salvage them.
- Clean Thoroughly: Wash any surfaces that may have come into contact with the salsa or peaches with hot, soapy water. This includes cutting boards,utensils,and refrigerator shelves.
- Monitor for Symptoms: If you experience any of the symptoms listed above, especially if you are in a high-risk group, consult your healthcare provider immediately. Inform them of the potential Listeria exposure.
