Plane Crash Off Texas Coast: Search and rescue underway
A small plane carrying a young medical patient and seven others crashed near Galveston, Texas, on Monday afternoon, triggering a large-scale search and rescue operation. The incident occurred close to a causeway along the Texas coast, roughly 50 miles southeast of Houston. Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the crash.
What we Know So Far:
* Four individuals aboard the aircraft were identified as Navy officers.
* Four others were civilians, including at least one child.
* Two passengers were affiliated with the Michou and Mau Foundation,a nonprofit dedicated to providing medical assistance to Mexican children suffering from severe burns.
* The plane was engaged in a medical transport mission at the time of the accident.
Emergency responders from multiple agencies are on the scene, including the U.S. Coast Guard, Galveston county Sheriff’s Office (dive team, crime scene unit, drone unit, and patrol), and teams from the Federal Aviation Governance (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). They are working diligently to locate and assist anyone involved.
The NTSB has dispatched a team to gather data and determine the factors that led to the crash. Currently, it’s unclear if weather conditions played a role. However, the area had experienced foggy conditions in the days leading up to the incident, with low visibility reported around the time of the crash.
