Michelle Williams on “Dying for Sex,” grief, and Gratitude: A Deep Dive into Her powerful Performance
Michelle Williams delivered a career-defining performance in the eight-episode miniseries, Dying for Sex. The show, based on the poignant podcast of the same name, chronicles the final days of Molly, a woman navigating terminal illness with raw honesty and unexpected humor. For Williams, the role wasn’t just a return to acting after a two-and-a-half-year hiatus; it was a profoundly moving experience that reshaped her perspective on life itself.
This finale, in particular, resonated deeply. Williams portrays Molly’s goodbyes, her embrace of wild freedom, and ultimately, her death with breathtaking vulnerability. The emotional weight of the role offered a unique gift: a renewed recognition for the simple act of living.
“I get to wash off some of the makeup that’s meant to make me look unwell,” Williams shared with Little Gold Men. “And I get to walk on my two strong legs. I get to leave this place and go back to my home. That’s the part that I take away.”
A Critical Acclaim & Industry Recognition
Dying for Sex garnered significant industry attention, receiving nine Emmy nominations. Williams herself was recognized twice: for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series as an executive producer, and for Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series. Notably, she previously won the latter award in 2019 for her compelling portrayal in Fosse/Verdon.
Currently balancing motherhood – caring for a five-month-old alongside her three older children – Williams admits to experiencing the familiar “mom brain.” despite the demands, she recently spoke with Vanity Fair about the show’s impact, the challenges of portraying death onscreen, and her optimism for the future of film and television.
The Power of Female Friendship & Unexpected Connections
The series’ exploration of female friendship was a central draw for Williams. She emphasized the stabilizing force her own friendships have provided throughout her life.”When I talked to my female friends about the idea of doing this show, they just got this misty, far-away look,” Williams explained. “They said, ‘Please do this for us. For how much we love each other, and for who we are to each other, and how passionate a friendship can be.'”
The show’s impact extended far beyond initial expectations. Williams shared a notably moving story relayed by Nikki Boyer, a key figure connected to the original podcast.
A pair of best friends watched the series together in hospice as one was nearing the end of her life. They sent Boyer a photo, both beaming with smiles, despite the heartbreaking circumstances.
This anecdote underscores the show’s ability to connect with audiences on a deeply personal level, offering solace and validation in the face of loss.
A Gut-Punch Reaction to the Source Material
Williams’ initial reaction to the Dying for Sex podcast mirrored the emotional response of many viewers. Introduced to the podcast alongside the first script draft, she was promptly captivated.
“It was a gut punch for me,” she admitted. “I didn’t know about the show when it first came out. I finished it and thought, ‘Hang on a second. is that as good as I think it is indeed?’ I needed to go back and read it immediately again.”
She experienced the same overwhelming emotional response upon revisiting the podcast. This double-take solidified her decision to take on the role. “What happened to me? Why did it overwhelm me to the point of weeping?” she recalled. “That’s so unusual. So I immediately went back to it and listened to the whole thing over again, and wept for a second time. So then I thought, okay, here we go. I’m in.”
