Myanmar’s Rare Earths: Fueling Conflict or a Path to Peace?

New International‍ Attention on Myanmar‘s Rare Earth Resources

Global interest ⁤in Myanmar’s reserves of rare earth minerals is rapidly increasing, ⁣drawing attention from nations seeking to diversify their‌ supply chains and⁤ secure access to these critical resources. I’ve⁢ found⁣ that the geopolitical implications of this growing demand are significant, especially⁤ as the country remains embroiled in internal⁤ conflict following the 2021⁢ military coup.

India is demonstrating a particularly strong interest in these resources. Reports indicate that New ⁢Delhi has initiated discussions with several ethnic armed groups, including the Kachin independence Organization (KIO). This rebel group controls notable deposits of dysprosium and terbium,‍ vital components in modern technologies, within Myanmar’s⁢ Kachin state, a region bordering both China and India.

Sources suggest‍ Indian officials ‌are exploring options⁤ to improve ⁣cross-border road connections to facilitate ⁤access ⁢to these rare earth elements. Such a move⁤ could further complicate the already complex‍ dynamics of the⁤ ongoing conflict.

“India’s potential involvement in ⁢rare earth extraction in northern Myanmar introduces a ‌new regional player,”⁢ explains Angshuman Choudhury,a researcher specializing in Myanmar. “It establishes⁣ a new ⁤competitive element in regional geopolitics and provides armed groups, such as the KIO, with another ‍negotiating partner.”

However, china ⁤currently holds the dominant position as an external actor in Myanmar’s resource sector.
