A surprising turn unfolded Wednesday during what was scheduled to be the arraignment for Nick Reiner, the man accused in the deaths of his prominent parents, filmmaker Rob Reiner and photographer Michele Singer Reiner. His attorney unexpectedly announced his withdrawal from the case, immediately following with a forceful assertion of his client’s innocence: “Take this to the bank. Pursuant to the law in California,Nick Reiner is not guilty of murder. Print that!”
nick reiner, 32, faces two counts of first-degree murder with special circumstances, stemming from the alleged stabbing deaths
of his parents on December 14th at their Brentwood, Los Angeles home.According to the L.A. County medical examiner, Rob and Michele Reiner succumbed to injuries caused by multiple sharp force traumas
.
The plea hearing was delayed when defense counsel, Alan Jackson, informed the court of his decision to withdraw, stating, “We feel that we have no choice at this juncture, but to withdraw as counsel.”
The court opted not to broadcast images of Nick Reiner during the proceedings; though, reports indicate he appeared in court shackled, with a shaved head, and wearing a brown jumpsuit.
Jackson, known for securing an acquittal in the Karen Read murder trial and previously representing Harvey Weinstein, refrained from detailing the reasons behind his withdrawal. He later conveyed to reporters that this decision represented one of the most difficult moments of his legal career.
Jackson explained that external factors, specifically circumstances beyond our control, but more importantly, circumstances beyond nick’s control
, made continued representation untenable. He further clarified that legal and ethical obligations prevented him from elaborating on the specifics.
The L.A. County Public Defender’s Office will now assume representation, with Deputy Public Defender Kimberly Greene assigned to the case. Nick Reiner will remain in custody pending a rescheduled arraignment date of Febuary 23rd.
L.A. County District Attorney Nathan Hochman expressed unwavering confidence in securing a conviction against Nick Reiner following the hearing.
