Brrrrr, it’s cold outside! Very, VERY cold outside — and it will only get worse next week!

After a very cold day Friday, temperatures take a slight upturn on Saturday as a system passes through the tri-state area leaving the area with a threat of precipitation.

Two weather systems will impact the tri-state this weekend.  The first brings a chance for inland snow Saturday.  The second offers light snow for Long Island and the Jersey Shore Sunday afternoon and evening.

A Winter Weather Advisory goes into effect early Saturday morning for parts of the Hudson Valley and Northwest New Jersey in anticipation of Saturday’s snow.  Specifically, Dutchess, Putnam, Orange, Sussex, Warren, Morris, Northern Passaic and Pike (Penn.) Counties are in the advisory area, where up to 4 inches of snow are possible.

Snow will begin after midnight Friday night and continue into Saturday afternoon.  With temperatures staying close to freezing away from the coast, these inland areas will experience all snow and, hence, higher snow totals.  Closer to the coast, temperatures will be above freezing, so snow will mix with rain and significantly limit snow accumulation.

Coastal areas, including New York City, can expect under an inch.  Many areas, like eastern Long Island and the Jersey Shore, won’t see any snow stick.

The snow that does accumulate will likely be wet and heavy, making for a sloppy day in most areas.

Coastal areas that don’t get snow Saturday may be in luck Sunday.  An area of low pressure well offshore could produce light snow as far west as Long Island and the Jersey Shore Sunday afternoon and evening.

These areas will get clipped by the western fringe of this storm system, so any snow that does fall will be light.  Suffolk and Ocean Counties can expect 1-3 inches.  Under an inch is more likely for Nassau and Monmouth Counties.  And, in New York City, there may be a dusting of snow at best.

Once Sunday’s system clears the region, a rush of cold air will deliver our coldest temperatures of this winter so far.

By Tuesday and Wednesday morning, temperatures in New York City will bottom out in the mid to upper teens.  Highs on Tuesday will languish in the 20s!  And beyond that, for the balance of the week ahead, we’ll be feeling the chill.  Temperatures will be below normal all week long.
