Bringing Healthcare Home: ‌Riverside Smithfield Hospital Addresses Critical Needs in Isle of Wight County, Virginia

For years, residents of Isle of Wight ⁤County, Virginia,⁣ have faced a meaningful challenge: limited access⁢ to quality healthcare. That’s about to change. Riverside Health System’s new Smithfield Hospital, slated ⁤to open in January, represents a major investment in the community and a ‌commitment to bridging this critical gap. A long-Awaited Solution for⁢ a Medically Underserved Area

Riverside Health System recognized the need nearly two decades ago,acquiring land in Isle of Wight County back in 2008. The county has ‍consistently been⁤ identified⁤ as a medically underserved area, meaning residents ‌face barriers ⁣to accessing essential medical services. ⁢

After years of planning ⁤and securing a certificate of public need from the state of ⁤Virginia ⁤in 2022, the project is now⁤ nearing ‍completion. The hospital’s arrival is notably timely, coinciding with the county’s population growth.

What to Expect ‍from Riverside Smithfield Hospital

The new facility⁣ is designed to provide ⁣extensive care close to⁤ home. Here’s a breakdown of ⁢key features:

* 38 medical/surgical beds
* ⁢  12 ICU beds
* 15-room emergency department
*  4 operating⁣ rooms
* ‍ 2 procedure suites

Beyond these core services, Riverside Smithfield hospital ⁤will prioritize specialty care, a crucial ⁢element in improving the health and well-being of the community.

Initially,Ms. Macalino had concerns about ⁤attracting talent. However, the hospital has successfully filled the‌ majority of its physician and provider positions. ⁢ They ‍are currently focused on securing a neurologist⁣ to build out⁤ a key specialty service. The hospital anticipates being fully staffed by mid-December.

The strong interest in working at Riverside Smithfield Hospital is a testament to the positive impact it will have on the region. Over 2,700 applicants responded within 45 days of the ‍initial job ⁤postings for the approximately 250 clinical and nonclinical positions. “People want ‍to be a part ⁢of⁢ something new,” Ms. Macalino noted.

Expanding Access to vital Specialty Services

Riverside Health System already has a presence in Isle of Wight County, but the new hospital will significantly ‍expand access to specialized medical care. ⁢ The attached medical office⁢ building will house a range of⁤ specialists, including:

* Orthopedics
* Cardiology
* ⁢ gastroenterology
* Urology
* Vascular Surgery
* Neurology ⁢(future expansion)

A Financially Lasting Model Focused on Patient⁤ Value

Financing a new hospital requires careful planning. ⁣Riverside Smithfield Hospital was funded⁤ through tax-exempt ⁤bonds. Ms. Macalino is confident in the hospital’s financial projections, anticipating a positive return on investment within the first few years of operation.

Her beliefs is simple: “If you put the⁢ patient⁤ at the center of everything you do, ‌and ‍you build your teams with that same⁢ mentality, then the‌ financial metrics are going to come.” This patient-centric approach is⁢ expected ⁣to⁣ not only deliver high-quality care ⁤but also⁤ lower costs for patients by reducing the need for travel and providing‌ more accessible services.
