Bringing Healthcare Home: Riverside Smithfield Hospital Addresses Critical Needs in Isle of Wight County, Virginia
For years, residents of Isle of Wight County, Virginia, have faced a meaningful challenge: limited access to quality healthcare. That’s about to change. Riverside Health System’s new Smithfield Hospital, slated to open in January, represents a major investment in the community and a commitment to bridging this critical gap. This isn’t just about building a hospital; it’s about building a healthier future for the region.
A long-Awaited Solution for a Medically Underserved Area
Riverside Health System recognized the need nearly two decades ago,acquiring land in Isle of Wight County back in 2008. The county has consistently been identified as a medically underserved area, meaning residents face barriers to accessing essential medical services.
After years of planning and securing a certificate of public need from the state of Virginia in 2022, the project is now nearing completion. The hospital’s arrival is notably timely, coinciding with the county’s population growth.
What to Expect from Riverside Smithfield Hospital
The new facility is designed to provide extensive care close to home. Here’s a breakdown of key features:
* 38 medical/surgical beds
* 12 ICU beds
* 15-room emergency department
* 4 operating rooms
* 2 procedure suites
Beyond these core services, Riverside Smithfield hospital will prioritize specialty care, a crucial element in improving the health and well-being of the community.
Addressing the Staffing Challenge in a Competitive Market
Jessica Macalino, President of Riverside Smithfield Hospital, understands the challenges of launching a new hospital, particularly in today’s healthcare landscape.Recruiting qualified medical professionals is a top priority.
Initially,Ms. Macalino had concerns about attracting talent. However, the hospital has successfully filled the majority of its physician and provider positions. They are currently focused on securing a neurologist to build out a key specialty service. The hospital anticipates being fully staffed by mid-December.
The strong interest in working at Riverside Smithfield Hospital is a testament to the positive impact it will have on the region. Over 2,700 applicants responded within 45 days of the initial job postings for the approximately 250 clinical and nonclinical positions. “People want to be a part of something new,” Ms. Macalino noted.
Expanding Access to vital Specialty Services
Riverside Health System already has a presence in Isle of Wight County, but the new hospital will significantly expand access to specialized medical care. The attached medical office building will house a range of specialists, including:
* Orthopedics
* Cardiology
* gastroenterology
* Urology
* Vascular Surgery
* Neurology (future expansion)
Appointments for some of these specialties are already being scheduled, offering patients convenient access to expert care without lengthy travel times. Currently, patients are traveling 30 minutes or more to receive care.
A Financially Lasting Model Focused on Patient Value
Financing a new hospital requires careful planning. Riverside Smithfield Hospital was funded through tax-exempt bonds. Ms. Macalino is confident in the hospital’s financial projections, anticipating a positive return on investment within the first few years of operation.
Her beliefs is simple: “If you put the patient at the center of everything you do, and you build your teams with that same mentality, then the financial metrics are going to come.” This patient-centric approach is expected to not only deliver high-quality care but also lower costs for patients by reducing the need for travel and providing more accessible services.
