Addressing the Staffing Challenge in a Competitive Market
Jessica Macalino, President of Riverside Smithfield Hospital, understands the challenges of launching a new hospital, particularly in today’s healthcare landscape.Recruiting qualified medical professionals is a top priority.
Initially,Ms. Macalino had concerns about attracting talent. However, the hospital has successfully filled the majority of its physician and provider positions. They are currently focused on securing a neurologist to build out a key specialty service. The hospital anticipates being fully staffed by mid-December.
The strong interest in working at Riverside Smithfield Hospital is a testament to the positive impact it will have on the region. Over 2,700 applicants responded within 45 days of the initial job postings for the approximately 250 clinical and nonclinical positions. “People want to be a part of something new,” Ms. Macalino noted.
Expanding Access to vital Specialty Services
Riverside Health System already has a presence in Isle of Wight County, but the new hospital will significantly expand access to specialized medical care. The attached medical office building will house a range of specialists, including:

Financing a new hospital requires careful planning. Riverside Smithfield Hospital was funded through tax-exempt bonds. Ms. Macalino is confident in the hospital’s financial projections, anticipating a positive return on investment within the first few years of operation.
Her beliefs is simple: “If you put the patient at the center of everything you do, and you build your teams with that same mentality, then the financial metrics are going to come.” This patient-centric approach is expected to not only deliver high-quality care but also lower costs for patients by reducing the need for travel and providing more accessible services.
