Perry Bamonte, Longtime ⁢Cure Guitarist, Dies ‍at 65

Perry Bamonte,⁤ a vital creative force behind‍ The Cure for over three decades, has passed away at the ‌age of 65 following ‍a brief illness. He ⁣was a beloved ⁤figure ⁣to ⁢fans and bandmates alike, leaving behind a legacy woven into the‍ fabric of‌ one ‌of alternative music’s ​most iconic groups.

A native ⁤of London, ⁢Bamonte’s​ journey with The‍ Cure⁢ began humbly​ in 1984. Initially joining their road crew at⁢ the encouragement ‌of ‌his ⁣brother, daryl, who served as their tour manager, he‌ quickly proved invaluable. He transitioned into roles as Robert Smith’s personal assistant and guitar technician, demonstrating a dedication that would define his career.

Bamonte officially became a full performing member‍ in 1990, following the departure of keyboardist Roger O’Donnell. His ⁤arrival injected ⁢fresh energy into⁤ the⁢ band’s sound, particularly evident on ‌the landmark album⁢ Wish ⁤in 1992. ⁣

He contributed significantly to several of the album’s most cherished‌ tracks. You’ll⁢ recognize his ‍distinctive six-string ⁢bass ⁣work‌ on hits like “Friday I’m in Love” ⁢and the poignant “A ‍Letter to Elise.”

Beyond ​ Wish, Bamonte’s talents graced a string​ of successful⁤ releases. These included the live albums Paris ​ and Show, as well as studio ⁤albums Wild Mood Swings, Bloodflowers, and the self-titled the Cure ⁣(2004).

However, his​ artistry extended beyond music. Bamonte‍ was a gifted‌ photographer, capturing​ stunning images of The Cure’s global adventures. ‌These visuals offered fans a ⁤unique⁢ glimpse into the band’s world.

After departing The Cure in 2005, he pursued a‌ career as an illustrator. Fortunately, he rejoined the band in 2022 and remained a ⁤key member until his passing. In 2019, he was rightfully inducted⁢ into the ⁣rock and​ Roll Hall of Fame alongside⁣ his bandmates.

The band released ⁣a heartfelt statement, describing Bamonte ‍as “Quite, intense, intuitive, constant ‌and hugely creative.” They emphasized his warm heart and vital role⁣ in The cure’s story.

They also noted that⁤ the ‍90 shows following his⁤ 2022 return were⁣ “some of the best in the band’s history,” ⁣culminating ‌in a memorable performance at The Show of a ⁣Lost World‌ in⁢ London on November 1, 2024. Their thoughts are with his family during this tough time.

the Cure are currently preparing for an extensive European summer tour,beginning in June with a headlining set ⁢at Barcelona’s Primavera Sound festival. The⁤ band has not yet ‌announced who⁤ will replace ⁤Bamonte ‍for⁢ these‍ upcoming dates.

Before the tour, Robert Smith is ⁣curating the annual Teenage Cancer trust ​charity concert series at⁤ London’s Royal Albert‍ Hall. The series, starting March 23,‌ will feature ‍performances by My Bloody​ Valentine, Garbage, CHVRCHES, and Manic ⁣Street ‍Preachers.
