From Finnish Farmlands to the Big Screen: Director Ollula‘s “Pigtown” and a Hometown Renaissance
A unique voice is emerging from the Finnish countryside, blending gritty horror with a deep-rooted commitment to community. Director Ollula’s upcoming film, ”Pigtown,” isn’t just a slasher flick; it’s a testament to the power of independent filmmaking and a heartfelt effort to revitalize a struggling rural town.
Currently, Ollula is also developing “Crime and Punishment of Toivo Harald Koljonen,” a true crime horror film based on the chilling story of Finland’s last executed axe murderer. This demonstrates a clear range and ambition within his filmmaking portfolio.
A Childhood Sparked by VHS and Splatter
Ollula’s passion for cinema ignited early in his life in the small farm town of Huhtamo. He and his friends spent countless hours immersed in the world of genre films, endlessly rewatching classics like Peter Jackson’s “Bad Taste” and “Braindead,” alongside staples like “RoboCop,” “Evil Dead,” and “Friday the 13th.”
This early exposure fueled their own creative endeavors. Armed with his father’s camcorder, Ollula and his friends began crafting their own low-budget slasher and splatter films, often casting his younger brother in the starring – and suffering – role.
Returning to His Roots: The Huhtamo International Film Festival
Although Ollula pursued higher education in Helsinki at age 16, Huhtamo remained a constant source of inspiration.Recognizing the decline of his hometown – businesses closing, residents moving away – he felt compelled to contribute to its revival.
In 2017, he launched the biannual huhtamo International Film Festival. This wasn’t just about bringing cinema to Huhtamo; it was about breathing new life into the community.
The festival is known for its innovative and unconventional venues.Imagine watching a film in a converted barn, “The Big Lebowski” at the town bowling alley, or “Top gun: Maverick” screened on a local airstrip - a truly unique “fly-in” cinema experience.
“Pigtown”: A Film Rooted in community
“Pigtown” represents the next step in Ollula’s filmmaking journey, and it’s deeply intertwined with his commitment to Huhtamo. He aims to use the film and the festival to boost the local economy.
You’ll find collaboration with townspeople woven into the production process, and the film itself showcases the beauty and character of Huhtamo. Ollula’s shooting locations are the same places where the festival takes place, creating a engaging synergy for attendees.
As he explains, “You can be at my festival, watching my film and realizing, ‘Wait a minute – I’m here and there!'”
A Director Driven by Purpose
Ollula’s story is a compelling example of how art can be a catalyst for positive change. He’s not just a filmmaker; he’s a community advocate, using his passion to address real-world challenges.
His dedication to Huhtamo and his innovative approach to filmmaking are sure to resonate with audiences and inspire others to find creative solutions for their own communities.
finnish Film Affair will be held September 24-26 in Helsinki, offering a platform to discover emerging talent like Ollula and his unique vision.
