Olympic Gold Medalist Quincy Wilson Chooses University of Maryland, Igniting Local Track & Field Renaissance
Quincy Wilson, the youngest male olympian in U.S. Track and Field history, has made his college decision. He’s staying close to home, committing to the University of Maryland (UMD) and turning down offers from elite programs nationwide. The declaration, made Monday night, signals a potential turning point for the Terrapins’ track and field program and reflects a growing trend of top athletes choosing to represent their home state.
Why Maryland? Family and Familiarity
Wilson’s decision wasn’t about facilities or national prestige. “I chose the University of Maryland, of all the other schools, as it’s close to home,” he explained. Remaining near family was paramount. “There’s nothing like being close to my family,” Wilson added, with a smile.
He playfully revealed his commitment by cutting into a cake adorned with UMD’s colors, adding a touch of youthful exuberance to the momentous occasion.
A Generational Talent Lands in College Park
UMD Head Track Coach Andrew Valmon expressed immense excitement about welcoming Wilson to the team. “Quincy is Quincy,” Valmon stated.”I think he’s a unique individual, it’s generational talent, and we’re super excited to pump some fusion in.”
Valmon emphasized the rarity of an athlete like Wilson becoming available. “He’s one of those kids that comes around every so frequently enough, and when you have the opportunity to land someone like that, you’ll go full throttle with it.”
From Olympic Glory to College Competition
Wilson’s accomplishments already speak for themselves. The chesapeake, Virginia native, currently a senior at Bullis High School in Potomac, Maryland, secured a gold medal in the 4×400 relay at the 2024 Paris Olympics. He played a crucial role in the qualifying heat, contributing to a historic victory for Team USA.
Representing his home region is a source of pride for Wilson. “It feels great to represent your home city because it’s where you get out of bed, it’s where you go to school, it’s where you do everything,” he said. He also highlighted the simple comforts of home. “So why would you leave if you can do it right here and you can have your family? My mom can cook for me, like I said.”
UMD Track & Field: A Program on the Rise
Wilson’s commitment arrives at a pivotal moment for UMD’s track and field program. News4 spoke with thea LaFond, an Olympic gold medalist, world champion, and UMD alumna, about the meaning of this moment.
LaFond experienced a program in rebuilding mode during her time as a Terrapin. The men’s track and field team had previously been cut, and she witnessed its resurgence firsthand.
“He now gets to set the tone and set the mark for what Maryland track and field is,” LaFond explained. She believes Wilson’s presence will elevate the entire UMD athletic department. “[…] What it, in turn, does is actually kind of force everything around the UMD athletic world to almost rise to the occasion.”
A Trend of Hometown Heroes
LaFond’s own journey to UMD involved a last-minute change of heart. She initially verbally committed to Penn State but was swayed after visiting the campus and connecting with the coach.
This shift mirrors a broader trend of elite Maryland athletes choosing to stay in-state. Baba Oladotun, a basketball star from Blake High School in Silver Spring, recently committed to UMD as well.
LaFond celebrated this wave of local talent. “We’re seeing these athletes choose to stay here in Maryland and become these hometown heroes,” she said. “What a week, what a time to be a Terp.”
Wilson’s decision isn’t just a win for the UMD track and field program; it’s a statement about the growing appeal of staying home and building something special in your community. It’s a moment that could redefine Maryland athletics for years to come.
