early Career & Engineering Foundations
Kopzhanov’s foundation was built at Purdue University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering in 2012. He immediately transitioned into a practical role,joining Fluor Corp. in Farnborough, England.
There,he quickly gained experience overseeing power project master planning and detailed engineering design. His responsibilities included high-voltage switchgears, substations, and transformers - critical components of any power infrastructure. This hands-on experience provided a strong base for his future endeavors.
Expanding Horizons at ExxonMobil
In 2015, Kopzhanov moved to ExxonMobil in Houston, marking a shift towards project management. Over six years,he progressed through managerial positions,culminating in the role of asset advisor.
This position was notably impactful. He focused on evaluating the financial and technical feasibility of investments in decarbonization and electrification projects. He identified both the risks and opportunities inherent in these emerging technologies. Kopzhanov observed a key industry inefficiency: ”Every power plant has its own interconnection rights but, amazingly, most are not fully utilizing them.”
The MBA Pivot: Bridging the Technical-Business Gap
Recognizing the need for a broader understanding of business principles, Kopzhanov pursued an MBA at Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business, beginning in 2021.He understood a critical truth: technical expertise alone isn’t enough.
“Engineers aren’t typically connected to the business world,” he explains, “but having an understanding of what the needs are and tailoring your future goals toward that is extremely important. In my view, that’s how you’ll become a great technical expert.”
During his MBA program, he further honed his analytical skills as a consultant for a lithium-ion manufacturing firm, assessing the viability of their proposed projects and investments. He graduated with his MBA in 2023.
