The Power of Story: A Filmmaker’s Outlook on Craft, Impact, and legacy
Filmmaking isn’t just about creating moving pictures; it’s about holding a mirror to society, sparking conversations, and forging genuine human connection. As a filmmaker, I’m constantly driven by the medium’s ability to reflect our times, celebrate triumphs, challenge norms, and expose truths. It’s a powerful tool, and one I approach with both reverence and responsibility.
But what makes a film truly work? And what should every aspiring storyteller keep in mind as they embark on this journey? Let’s dive in.
Why Filmmaking Matters – to You and the World
The importance of film extends far beyond entertainment. Here’s why it resonates so deeply:
* reflection & Commentary: Films capture the zeitgeist, offering a snapshot of our values, anxieties, and aspirations.
* Emotional Resonance: A well-crafted story can move audiences, evoke empathy, and inspire action.
* Human Connection: Sharing stories is basic to the human experience, and film provides a powerful platform for that connection.
* Escapism & Joy: Sometimes, you simply need to get lost in a world crafted for wonder and enjoyment.
For me personally, the magic happens in a darkened theater, surrounded by an audience experiencing a story together. That shared experience is truly special.
Honing Your Craft: A Core Principle for Storytellers
Throughout my career, I’ve found one guiding principle consistently elevates storytelling: Dose this scene advance the narrative?
While detours for character progress or comedic relief have their place, they should serve a purpose. This simple question acts as a backbone, tightening your narrative and ensuring every moment contributes to the overall impact. It’s about intentionality and respecting your audience’s time.
Beyond the Camera: What Else Drives Me?
If I weren’t behind the camera, I’d likely be surrounded by animals. A professional pet sitter, perhaps? The combination of comfort, adventure, and unconditional love sounds like a dream.
Leaving a Legacy: Stories that Matter
My work is deeply rooted in a desire to amplify underrepresented voices, particularly those of women and girls. The inequalities within sports - the lack of investment, the pervasive sexism - are particularly glaring.
The arena can be a powerful stage for change, a place to challenge societal norms and advocate for a more equitable future. My goal is to create films that not only document thes struggles but also inspire hope and demonstrate the untapped potential within these communities. We’re seeing positive shifts, with growing viewership and investment in women’s sports, but there’s still a long road ahead.
A Little About Me…
I was married by Elvis! It’s a story I still love to tell. And, thanks to my energetic dog, I’ve become a dedicated early bird.
When I received the call about getting into the Sundance Film Festival from Kim Yutani, I was alone in Brooklyn Bridge Park. I’m pretty sure the birds and a few unsuspecting passersby heard my excited squeal before anyone else!
Sundance Standouts: Films That Inspire
the Sundance Institute and Festival have consistently championed groundbreaking cinema. Some films that have profoundly impacted me include:
* Little Miss Sunshine (Valerie Faris & Jonathan Dayton): A film I can revisit endlessly, appreciating its quirky charm and heartwarming message.
* minari (Lee Isaac Chung): A beautifully crafted story that resonates on a deeply emotional level.
* The Wolfpack (Crystal Moselle): A captivating exploration of an extraordinary family and their unique inner world.
* Grizzly Man (Werner Herzog): A devastatingly moving and thought-provoking documentary.
Ultimately, filmmaking is about more than just technical skill. It’s about empathy, observation, and a commitment to telling stories that matter. It’s a privilege, and one I don’t take lightly.
