Spotify Levels Up Its Free Tier: Play Any Song,Skip With Freedom
Spotify has dramatically changed teh game for its free users. Previously, if you didn’t pay for a subscription, you were limited to shuffle-only playback and a frustratingly low number of skips per hour. Now, Spotify is removing those restrictions, bringing the mobile experience much closer to the versatility of its desktop version.
A Major Shift in Free Streaming
according to Spotify, you can now play any song or podcast directly, whether you find it in a playlist, through search, or even when shared by a friend. This is a significant departure from the past, where free users were largely confined to a randomized listening experience.
This move positions spotify competitively against rivals like YouTube Music and Pandora, which still impose more limitations on their free tiers. Even Apple Music, which primarily offers previews, may feel the impact of this change.
This update also has the potential to attract more free users, as they already represent the largest segment of Spotify’s audience. Ultimately, this could translate into more paying subscribers down the line.
What Remains the Same: Ads and Time Limits
Despite these improvements, the free experience isn’t entirely ad-free or unlimited. Spotify confirmed to CNET that shuffle-only playback will return once you exhaust your “daily on-demand time.” The exact duration of this window hasn’t been disclosed.
Importantly, ad interruptions are still a part of the free Spotify experience. While not quite matching the full playback and skipping freedom of the desktop version (which still includes ads), this update represents a considerable step toward premium-like features for free users.
Beyond the Free Tier: Lossless Audio for Premium subscribers
Earlier this month, Spotify also launched its long-awaited lossless audio feature. Now, Premium subscribers can stream the vast majority of the catalog in high-fidelity 24-bit, 44.1 kHz FLAC format. This feature requires a wired connection to fully appreciate the enhanced audio quality and is available with the Premium plan, starting at $12 per month.
Here’s a quick recap of the changes:
* Full On-Demand Playback: Play any song or podcast you choose.
* Unlimited Skips: Skip tracks without restrictions.
* Shared Track Playback: Listen to songs sent to you by friends.
* Ad-Supported: Ads remain part of the free experience.
* Daily Time Limit: On-demand playback is limited to a daily window.
* Lossless Audio (Premium): Enjoy high-fidelity streaming with a Premium subscription.
