K-Pop Stars Rally Support for Hong Kong Following Devastating Fire
A wave of support is flowing from the K-pop world to Hong Kong following a recent tragic fire. Several prominent groups were quick to respond to the heartbreaking news.Girl group aespa pledged 500,000 Hong Kong dollars (approximately $64,000) to the Hong Kong Red Cross, expressing their deep sorrow over the incident. Stray Kids followed suit, committing 1 million Hong Kong dollars ($129,000) through World Vision Hong Kong to provide temporary housing and aid to those affected, notably children and residents.
Beyond individual groups, major entertainment companies are also contributing. SM and JYP Entertainment, two of South Korea’s leading agencies, combined to donate 3 million Hong Kong dollars ($385,000) for emergency relief and long-term disaster recovery efforts.
Further demonstrating the widespread support, RIIZE, EXO-CBX, and KickFlip each contributed 100,000 Hong Kong dollars ($12,900) via World Vision Hong Kong. This collective effort highlights the industry’s commitment to helping those in need.
However, the response hasn’t been without scrutiny. The MAMA AWARDS, a major K-pop event scheduled to take place in Hong Kong on November 28th and 29th, initially faced criticism for proceeding with the show. Many felt canceling the event would be a more appropriate response to the tragedy.
Organizers ultimately decided to cancel the red carpet events for both days.The main ceremony will continue as planned, but will now include a “Support Hong Kong” message and a dedicated moment of mourning. CJ E&M, the event’s organizer, also pledged a substantial donation of 20 million Hong Kong dollars ($2.6 million) to the Hong Kong government’s support fund.
