Fubo Lowers Prices Following NBCUniversal Channel Blackout
Fubo, the live TV streaming service, is adjusting its subscription costs, offering some customers savings of up to 14.8%. This move comes after a recent dispute led to the removal of NBCUniversal channels from its lineup. Let’s break down what this means for you and why Fubo is making this change.
Disney’s Acquisition and the Shifting Landscape
Earlier this year, Disney took a significant step by acquiring a majority stake in Fubo. this acquisition followed scrutiny regarding potential antitrust concerns. Then, in October, Disney finalized the deal, solidifying its position in the competitive streaming market.
Price Adjustments for Fubo Subscribers
Starting with billing cycles on or after January 1, 2026, you’ll see thes new monthly prices:
* Essential: $74 per month (down from $85)
* Pro: $75 per month (down from $85)
* Elite: $84 per month (down from $95)
Generally, announcements from streaming services signal price increases. This reduction is a notable departure from that trend.
The NBCUniversal Blackout: What Happened?
though, the price cut isn’t simply a perk. Its largely a response to the loss of NBCUniversal channels, which disappeared from Fubo on November 21. This blackout impacts access to a wide range of programming, including:
* Local NBC affiliates
* Telemundo
* Nine regional sports channels
* bravo, CNBC, MSNBC, and USA Network, among 32 total channels.
Furthermore, you may see additional reductions in your bill if any regional sports networks you previously received are no longer available.Fubo previously offered a $15 credit to subscribers affected by the blackout.
Why the Price Drop?
A Fubo spokesperson confirmed that the new pricing directly reflects the removal of NBCUniversal’s networks. Essentially, Fubo is passing the savings from not carrying these channels onto you, the subscriber.
When asked if prices would revert if NBCUniversal channels were reinstated,the spokesperson indicated it was too early to speculate.
The Dispute with NBCUniversal Explained
Fubo contends that NBCUniversal is attempting to overcharge for its channels, especially those that will soon fall under Versant. Versant is a new company created from the spinoff of NBCUniversal’s cable channels and digital properties, slated to launch in January.
Fubo offered to carry Versant channels for one year, but NBCUniversal reportedly wants a multi-year agreement extending beyond Versant’s ownership. According to Fubo, this would effectively require its subscribers to subsidize these channels.
This situation highlights the complex negotiations that occur behind the scenes in the streaming industry, ultimately impacting what you can watch and how much you pay for it. It’s a reminder that the streaming landscape is constantly evolving, and providers are continually navigating content rights and costs.
