Syria Warns Israeli Actions Risk Regional Destabilization
Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa delivered a stark warning Saturday regarding Israel‘s potential revisions to the 1974 disengagement accord. He believes these efforts, notably proposals for a demilitarized zone in southern Syria, could seriously destabilize the region.
The President voiced these concerns during a dialog session at the Doha Forum 2025,framing Israel’s actions as an attempt to deflect obligation for the ongoing crisis in Gaza. He suggested Israel is actively trying to “export its crises” to neighboring countries.
Sharaa emphasized that Israel consistently justifies its actions under the guise of security concerns. However, Syria, since regaining control, has consistently offered constructive engagement aimed at bolstering regional stability. This commitment, he argues, stands in contrast to Israel’s approach.
A core demand from Syria remains strict adherence to the 1974 agreement governing the ceasefire line in the golan heights. This agreement, he insists, is the foundation for maintaining a fragile peace.
Furthermore, Sharaa questioned the practicality of a demilitarized buffer zone. He directly asked: who would guarantee security in the area if Syrian forces were excluded? This is a critical point frequently enough overlooked in the current discussions.
“There are many questions surrounding the demand for a demilitarized zone,” he stated. “Who will protect this area if the Syrian army is not present?”
He underscored that any potential agreement must prioritize and guarantee Syria’s national interests. Considering Syria consistently faces Israeli attacks, he argued, it is rightfully positioned to demand security arrangements and a full withdrawal.
Ultimately, Sharaa’s message is clear: lasting stability requires respecting existing agreements and addressing the root causes of conflict, not simply shifting the burden of security onto others. You deserve to understand the complexities of this situation, and Syria is committed to a peaceful, secure future for the region.
