Trinity Irish Dance Company to premiere ”The Sash” in New York City
A song historically associated with sectarian marches in Northern Ireland has been
reimagined in a powerful new Irish dance performance by
Trinity Irish Dance Company,
set to debut on the new York City stage in February 2026.
A New Vision of Irish dance
Founded in 1990 by choreographer Mark Howard, Trinity Irish Dance Company is
recognized as a pioneer of progressive Irish dance. Howard’s latest work,
“The Sash,” premiered in the summer of 2025 at
jacob’s Pillow in Becket,
Massachusetts, to critical acclaim.
The Story Behind “The Sash”
“The Sash” draws inspiration from Northern Irish composer Kevin Sharkey’s
childhood experiences during the Troubles. The performance aims to convey a
message of unity and peace, demonstrating that collaboration is more potent than
conflict. The piece blends traditional Irish dance with contemporary
movements, creating a unique and innovative vocabulary for the art form.
Musical and Dramatic elements
The performance features a stirring score composed by Kevin Sharkey and
incorporates dialog from the popular television series Derry Girls,
along with spoken word passages delivered by acclaimed Irish actress Eva
