US-backed Gaza Peace Plan Advances with New council and Committee
A US-backed plan for peace in Gaza is progressing with the formation of a “Peace Council” lead by former President Donald Trump, and a 15-member Palestinian technocratic committee tasked with administering the Gaza Strip in the aftermath of the recent conflict. The plan initially facilitated the return of hostages held by Hamas and a cessation of hostilities with Israel.
Formation of the Peace Council
Donald Trump announced the formation of the “Peace Council” on his Truth Social platform, stating it is “the largest and most prestigious council ever assembled.” Members of the council are expected to be announced shortly. The council will oversee the work of the Palestinian technocratic committee.
The technocratic committee will focus on the administration of Gaza following the recent conflict. A key component of the broader plan involves the deployment of an international stabilization force to secure Gaza and train select units of the Palestinian police.
Hamas and Israel’s Response
Basem Naim, a senior Hamas official, stated that “the ball is now in the court of the mediators, the US guarantor, and the international community to provide the committee with the means to act.”
