Uganda elections Marred by Violence, Repression, and Internet Shutdown
Uganda’s recent elections have been overshadowed by a widespread campaign of repression targeting opposition supporters, journalists, and civil society organizations, raising serious concerns about the fairness and integrity of the electoral process. The period leading up to and following the election, which saw incumbent Yoweri Museveni secure a seventh term, was marked by violence, arrests, and restrictions on essential freedoms.
Crackdown on Opposition and Supporters
Reports indicate a brutal crackdown on supporters of opposition candidates, notably those aligned with Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine. Amnesty International documented instances of security forces beating and arresting hundreds of people during opposition rallies. These forces indiscriminately used tear gas, and physically assaulted individuals, including slapping and kicking them.
