The Early NBA Rookie Race: Is Cooper Flagg‘s Momentum Faltering?
The NBA rookie class of 2024 promised a wealth of talent, and the initial weeks of the season haven’t disappointed. Though, the predicted frontrunner narrative is already facing a challenge. Early projections heavily favored Cooper Flagg, mirroring the recent success of Cade Cunningham who took home Rookie of the Year honors in 2022.But the landscape is shifting, and a new name is rapidly ascending the ranks.
A Shifting Landscape
Initially, expectations were high for Flagg, much like they were for Ming and Saric who finished as runners-up to Cunningham. Two weeks into the season, though, the statistical reality paints a different picture. VJ Edgecombe is currently outpacing Flagg significantly in combined averages.
Moreover, several other rookies are making a strong case for consideration. Cedric Coward, currently leading in advanced stats, Dylan Harper, and Kon Knueppel are all closely trailing Edgecombe. This creates a surprisingly competitive race,and it’s one you should be paying attention to.
Rookie Standings: A Closer Look (as of nov. 3rd)
Here’s a snapshot of the top rookie performers, based on points, rebounds, and assists per game:
* VJ Edgecombe (Philadelphia 76ers): 20.3 PPG, 5.0 RPG, 5.0 APG – Combined: 30.3
* Cooper Flagg (Dallas Mavericks): 13.8 PPG, 6.5 RPG, 3.0 APG - Combined: 23.3
* Cedric Coward (Memphis Grizzlies): 15.0 PPG, 4.9 RPG, 2.6 APG - Combined: 22.4
* Dylan Harper (san Antonio Spurs): 14.0 PPG, 4.0 RPG, 3.8 APG – Combined: 21.8
* Kon Knueppel (Charlotte Hornets): 14.0 PPG, 4.9 RPG, 2.3 APG – Combined: 21.1
* Jeremiah Fears (new Orleans Pelicans): 13.7 PPG,2.5 RPG, 3.8 APG – Combined: 20.0
* Tre Johnson (Washington Wizards): 12.7 PPG, 3.3 RPG, 1.7 APG – Combined: 17.7
* Collin Murray-Boyles (Toronto Raptors): 10.6 PPG,3.8 RPG, 1.6 APG – Combined: 16.0
* Ryan Kalkbrenner (Charlotte hornets): 9.0 PPG, 6.6 RPG,0.4 APG - Combined: 16.0
The Assist Numbers and Team Success Matter
I’ve found that assist numbers are often a key indicator of a point guard’s impact. Despite playing the point guard position, Flagg is currently averaging only 3.0 assists per game. This is a crucial area for enhancement.
Moreover, the Dallas Mavericks, Flagg’s team, are currently last in the league in offensive efficiency. While individual stats are important, team success often carries significant weight in Rookie of the Year voting.
What Does This Mean for Flagg?
It’s not time to write off Cooper Flagg by any means.His numbers should improve as he adjusts to the NBA game.However, if he doesn’t demonstrate statistical dominance and his team doesn’t start winning, it will be difficult for him to overtake Edgecombe.
Edgecombe, conversely, is not only putting up remarkable numbers but is also doing so on a team poised
