WhatsApp to introduce new Feature Allowing Selective Sharing of Recent Chat History with New Group Members
san Francisco, CA – January 24, 2026 – WhatsApp is rolling out a new beta feature allowing group administrators to selectively share recent chat history with newly added members. This highly anticipated functionality, currently available to a limited number of beta testers via TestFlight, aims to quickly onboard new participants and provide context to ongoing conversations.
The feature addresses a common issue in group chats: the challenge for new members to understand the existing conversation flow. Instead of being promptly thrust into a stream of unfamiliar messages, administrators can now choose to share the last 100 messages from the past 14 days with new additions. This provides a concise overview of recent discussions, key decisions, and ongoing topics.
According to WABetaInfo, the shared messages will be visually distinguished within the chat, likely through a unique highlighting scheme, making it easy for new members to identify the content specifically shared for their benefit. This transparency is a key element of the design, ensuring all group members are aware when recent chat history has been shared with a newcomer. WhatsApp will reportedly display a notification within the group chat indicating who shared the message history.
“This is a significant betterment to the WhatsApp group experience,” says technology analyst, Sarah Chen. “Often, joining a busy group mid-stream can be overwhelming. This feature allows for a smoother integration and reduces the need for repetitive explanations of past events.”
The functionality is currently accessed through the “Add Members” section within the group info screen. After selecting a contact to add, users may see an option to share recent messages. Administrators can then choose to share all 100 messages, or a smaller subset, depending on the context of the conversation.
Security remains a priority. The shared messages are end-to-end encrypted, ensuring the same level of privacy as existing WhatsApp communications. The sharing process utilizes the existing message and encryption keys from the administrator’s device, maintaining a secure transfer of data.
While a wider rollout date hasn’t been announced, the fact that the feature is being tested on both iOS (via TestFlight) and Android platforms suggests a relatively swift public release is likely in the coming weeks or months. This update underscores WhatsApp’s commitment to enhancing the user experience and addressing common pain points within its popular messaging platform.
