Concert
Madonna ended her world tour with a free concert on the beach in Rio de Janeiro. 1.6 million fans attended, according to the city. Some had arrived days in advance to secure a good spot.
The concert Saturday night was the closing event of the Celebration tour, in which the 65-year-old artist looks back on her career. She opened with Nothing really matters, her hit from 1998. Later in the more than two-hour set, Like a virgin, Hung up and Like a prayer were included. Brazilian stars Anitta and Pabllo Vittar joined her on stage.
Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil has often been the location for mega-events. The Rolling Stones attracted 1.2 million spectators there in 2006. But the record holder was Rod Stewart: he is said to have brought together as many as 4 million people in the same place in 1994 for what remains the largest free rock concert in history.
The concert was financed by local authorities and sponsors.
