Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The Asian region is being hit by a heat wave. Several cities in Southeast Asia even recorded temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius.

According to AccuWeather data on Thursday (2/5/2024) until 13.15 WIB, a heat wave with high temperatures was most pronounced in Asia, starting from parts of Pakistan, India, parts of Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia. Hot temperatures range from 36 degrees to the most severe up to 41 degrees Celsius.

Three countries in Southeast Asia that recorded temperatures of more than 40 degrees Celsius were parts of Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam.

It should be noted that Myanmar recorded the highest temperature record in April, reaching 48.2 degrees Celsius in the city of Chauk in the Magway region of central Myanmar. This record is the highest since temperature records began 56 years ago, according to a statement from Myanmar’s weather office.

The heat wave was also observed to be spreading in parts of Malaysia, the Philippines, Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, and Australia also recorded an increase in hot temperatures. However, the average is still lower compared to countries in the north.

Looking at history, according to data from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), there are 10 areas on earth that are considered to be the hottest places in the world. Check out the following list:

1. Ahvaz, Iran
The capital of Khuzestan province, Ahvaz, which is home to many oil reserves and is one of Iran’s most important industrial centers is also the hottest in the world.

WMO recorded the average temperature reaching 45 degrees Celsius. This area is very hot because there are lots of deserts around it and only receives little rainfall. Dust storms often occur in this region, temperatures in winter only reach 18 degrees Celsius.

2. Turpan, China
Turpan, a region in Xinjiang province, in northwestern China, is famous for its Buddhist monasteries surrounded by desert landscapes. The temperature there sometimes reaches 50 degrees Celsius with the area bordered by volcanic mountains.

3. Wadi Halfa, Sudan

At 52.8 degrees Celsius, Wadi Halfa, a region of Sudan near the Sala desert, is one of the hottest places in the world. Housing options there are limited, and the only way to get there is by train or rented car.

4. Timbuktu, Mali
Still close to the Sala desert, there is one area, namely Timbuktu in Mali. With the highest temperature of 54.4°C, this region is also considered to be one of the hottest populated areas in the world.

5. Turbat, Pakistan
Next there is Pakistan with a temperature recorded at 53.7 degrees Celsius on May 28 2017. This measurement was precisely carried out in the Turbat area. In 2019, the WMO updated it for the second time and recorded the highest temperature reaching 54 degrees Celsius at the time of the Mitriva inspection.

Recently, a heat wave hit all of Pakistan, especially Turbat, the impact was felt because it coincided with the month of Ramadan, especially during the fasting period, where Muslims have to endure hunger and thirst for more than 12 hours.

6. Mitribah, Kuwait
Mitribah in Kuwait is also considered to be the hottest region on earth. The highest temperature recorded on July 21 2016 reached 53.9°C. Northwest Kuwait is actually home to a climate observatory known as Mitriba. The credibility of the data results is claimed to be higher than statistics from other places, including Death Valley, which cast doubt on this, so the record temperature of 53.9°C may be the highest in history.

In most areas, including neighboring countries, extremely high temperatures reaching almost 50 degrees Celsius occur on certain days in Kuwait. It also includes densely populated locations such as major cities in Saudi Arabia and Iraq.

7. Kebili, Tunisia
Next there is the village of Kebili, Tunisia. WMO recorded that the highest temperature reached 55 degrees Celsius on July 7 1931.

This achievement is the highest temperature on one continent caused by the Sahara desert. This area is also considered challenging to live in, because apart from the temperature which can be very hot, reaching more than 40 degrees Celsius, during winter the temperature can drop to -5 degrees Celsius.

8. Death Valley, United States (US)

The highest temperature ever recorded in Death Valley, United States (US) on July 10, 1913 reached 56.7 degrees Celsius. The region is becoming increasingly famous as a place to observe the hottest temperatures on Earth and as a tourist destination.

According to visitors, the weather in Death Valley is so hot that it is enough to cook eggs until they burn on the ground. This is also a common practice for visitors coming from Las Vegas.

9. Brazil

A heatwave also suffocated Brazil, which set a new record with temperatures in Rio de Janeiro reaching 62.3 degrees Celsius, the highest in a decade, the country’s weather authority said.

The heat index measures what a temperature is like taking humidity into account. The actual maximum temperature in the city was 42C on Monday, the Rio Alert weather system said.

However, the day before, a record temperature of 62.3C was reached in western Rio at 09:55 (12:55 GMT) on Sunday, and was the “highest temperature” since Alerta Rio began recording such records in 2014.

10. Iran’s Lut Desert

The Lut Desert in Iran has recorded temperatures above 70 degrees Celsius, this area is considered the hottest place no. 1 on earth. NASA measurements also show that surface temperatures have been measured above this figure. The temperature of this region is close to boiling water.

In 2004 and 2007, this location was named one of the hottest locations ever recorded, before reaching extremely high temperatures. As in more arid mid-latitude zones, this region may reach or exceed its limits in summer. This location was ranked first in the world for temperature in 2005.
