The reign of 30 chargers with different inputs lost around the house is coming to an end: from next year, all electronic equipment placed on the community market will have to allow charging from a common plug: USB-C.

The decision results from the approval of the European Commission’s proposal, after 12 years of voluntary commitments from the technology sector, which allowed a reduction of 30% for the current three models: USB-C, Micro-USB (type B) and Lightning ( from Apple), highlights Deco Proteste.

USB-C chargers must always have the possibility of extracting the cable (that is, they must be sold as a plug and cable set). This solution will allow charging power to be increased to values of up to 240 watts, due to ongoing developments in the USB Power Delivery protocol.

Another advantage of the USB-C interface, according to the same source, is to minimize the inconvenience for consumers caused by incompatibility between the different protocols used in chargers.

According to data from the European Commission, this type of equipment generates 11 thousand tons of marine litter annually and leads European consumers to spend close to 2.4 billion euros per year on chargers.

Cell phones, tablets, cameras, headphones or headsets, portable game consoles, Bluetooth speakers, e-book readers, keyboards, mice and portable navigation devices will have to comply with this standard from the end of this year. In the case of portable computers, the established deadline is April 28, 2026.

Consumers will be able to choose between purchasing a device with or without a charger, but the measure aims to encourage buyers to opt for the most sustainable solution for the environment and their wallet.
