The Growing Demand for Complete Obesity Care Coverage: A Call to employers
November 4, 2025 – A powerful movement is gaining momentum, urging employers to recognise and address a critical gap in healthcare coverage: comprehensive care for obesity. Nearly 40,000 individuals have already signed a petition spearheaded by the Alliance for women’s Health and Prevention’s (AWHP) EveryBODY Covered Campaign,demanding employers prioritize support for employees living with this chronic condition.
This isn’t simply about weight loss; it’s about recognizing obesity as a complex health issue and providing access to evidence-based treatments. Launched in Febuary 2024, the EveryBODY Covered Campaign is built on the understanding that effective obesity care is an investment in a healthier, more productive workforce.
The Three Key Demands for Employers
The petition outlines three crucial steps employers can take to improve the lives of their employees and bolster their bottom line:
* Acknowledge obesity as a Chronic Disease: Move beyond outdated stigmas and recognize obesity as a multifaceted health condition influenced by genetic, physiological, environmental, and behavioral factors – frequently enough beyond an individual’s direct control.
* Expand & Communicate Benefits: Thoroughly evaluate existing employee benefits packages to identify and fill gaps in obesity care support. This includes full coverage for a range of options:
* FDA-approved medications (like GLP-1s)
* Bariatric surgery
* Behavioral interventions
* Nutrition services
Ensure clear interaction to benefits administrators and employees about available resources.
* Combat Weight Bias: Foster a culture of inclusivity and respect at all levels of the institution. This means educating employees, utilizing person-first language, and providing necessary accommodations for those living with obesity.
The Impact of Untreated Obesity: Beyond Health Concerns
The need for comprehensive coverage is underscored by the meaningful health and economic consequences of untreated obesity. The American Medical Association recognizes obesity as being associated with over 200 health complications,impacting overall well-being and driving up healthcare costs.
But the impact extends beyond physical health. Research reveals a troubling disparity: women living with obesity earn, on average, 9% less than their counterparts without the condition and are less likely to receive promotions. This highlights the systemic biases that can hinder career advancement and financial stability.
“Providing comprehensive obesity care support is an investment in a more productive workforce,” explains Cassie Maxwell, an EveryBODY covered advocate from West Virginia. Her personal experience losing coverage for vital medications underscores the real-world impact of these policies.
A Step Backwards? Insurer Coverage Rollbacks
This push for expanded coverage comes at a critical juncture. Some insurers, including Blue Cross Blue Shield of massachusetts and harvard Pilgrim Health care, are rolling back coverage for GLP-1 medications specifically for weight loss, despite continuing to cover them for diabetes management.
This trend is deeply concerning. As AWHP CEO Millicent Gorham points out, these decisions reinforce harmful stigmas and exacerbate health complications. A recent Business Group on Health survey reveals a disparity: 73% of self-insured employers cover GLP-1s for obesity, compared to 99% for diabetes.
Why Comprehensive Coverage Matters
The EveryBODY Covered Campaign isn’t just advocating for better healthcare; it’s advocating for a more equitable and productive future. By prioritizing comprehensive obesity care, employers can:
* Improve Workforce Health: Reduce the prevalence of obesity-related health complications.
* Increase Productivity: Support employees in achieving optimal health and well-being.
* Reduce Healthcare costs: Proactive care can prevent costly complications down the line.
* Foster a More Inclusive Workplace: Demonstrate a commitment to employee well-being and equity.
The growing support for this petition signals a clear demand for change. It’s time for employers to listen and invest in the health and future of their workforce.
