This disturbing incident, which can be described as a mass illness, occurred during Condor flight DE2315. The Airbus A330 aircraft, taking off from Port Louis International Airport in Mauritius at around 7:55 a.m., landed in Germany at 5:30 p.m. after a flight of almost 12 hours. A fleet of ambulances were waiting at the scene and were dispatched after the airline alerted local authorities to the situation on board.

Of the 290 passengers on flight DE2315, about a quarter reported gastrointestinal problems, including nausea and diarrhea. However, the airline assures that pilots and cabin crew were not harmed because of this. It is not entirely clear when passengers began reporting symptoms, but despite the growing number of people affected, the decision was made to continue the flight to Frankfurt rather than make an emergency landing in another country.

Fortunately, some passengers appear to have started recovering before arriving in Frankfurt. Local media reported that ultimately not all ambulances were needed.

The cause of the disease is still one big unknown. Suspicion falls on the food served during the flight. The Condor airline assures that it has already initiated an investigation into this matter. However, the carrier’s spokesman did not want to comment on whether the on-board catering could be blamed for the situation.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, some types of food poisoning, such as Staphylococcus aureus poisoning, can cause symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps and diarrhea as early as 30 minutes after eating contaminated food. Others, like norovirus, may take several days for symptoms to appear. This means that the passengers could have been infected while still in Mauritius.

After the plane landed, the cleaners had a real challenge to clean up the mess left on board. The plane was not scheduled for another flight for more than 24 hours after landing in Frankfurt.
