9/11 First Responder Network at Risk: Congress Must Act

FirstNet: A Lifeline for First ⁣Responders – Why Reauthorization is Critical

For those of us who have dedicated our careers to public safety, reliable communication isn’t just a convenience – it’s a matter of life and death. As‍ the former NYPD Commissioner, serving both before and after 9/11, I’ve seen firsthand the devastating consequences of communication failures during emergencies. That’s why the First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet) is ⁢so vital, and‍ why its‍ upcoming reauthorization is a critical⁤ issue for Congress and the nation.

What is FirstNet and Why Does It⁤ Matter?

FirstNet is a dedicated, nationwide wireless broadband network built for public safety, by public ⁤safety, in partnership with⁣ AT&T. It’s a system designed to ⁢ensure that our first responders – police, firefighters, EMS personnel – can communicate seamlessly ⁢across ⁤jurisdictions,‍ even when commercial networks are overwhelmed.

Here’s what sets FirstNet apart:

Priority Access: ‍FirstNet gives⁣ first responders priority and preemption ⁣on⁣ the⁤ network. your calls and data always go through,⁢ no ‍matter the congestion.
Dedicated Spectrum: It operates on a dedicated band of spectrum, ⁢ensuring a reliable connection when you need it most.
nationwide Coverage: FirstNet serves over 30,000⁤ public safety agencies and⁤ departments across the country, fostering interoperability.
Continuous Improvement: AT&T is investing $18 billion over the life of ⁣the contract to⁢ strengthen and expand the network.
Fiscally Responsible: Remarkably, all of this is achieved⁣ without taxpayer funding.

A Proven Lifeline in Times of Crisis

FirstNet isn’t just a theoretical⁣ benefit; it’s a proven lifeline. Recently, it played a crucial⁢ role during the devastating flash floods in Texas Hill Country, keeping first responders connected ⁣during ⁣a chaotic and hazardous situation. It continues to support recovery efforts today.⁤

Think back to 9/11. The communication breakdowns that day were horrific. FirstNet aims to⁣ prevent those failures from ever happening again. ⁣ It’s about honoring the ‍sacrifices ⁤made that ‍day and equipping those who run ⁤ toward danger with⁣ the⁢ tools they⁣ need to save lives.

The Impending Deadline: Reauthorization in 2027

Unfortunately, ⁢FirstNet’s authorizing legislation is set to expire in 2027. if Congress doesn’t act, we risk jeopardizing this critical infrastructure ⁢and ‍reverting to the unreliable communication systems of the past.

This isn’t a partisan issue. The reauthorization of FirstNet is overwhelmingly supported ‍by the organizations representing‍ those on ⁤the front lines:

National Fraternal Order of Police
⁢ International⁢ Association of Fire Fighters
International Association of Chiefs of Police
* ‍ International Association of Fire Chiefs

These are the voices of ⁤experience, the peopel who understand ‍the stakes.⁣ They’ve seen failure, and they know what success looks like.

A Call to⁤ Action: Securing Our Future

The House‍ Energy and Commerce Committee is ⁤holding a ⁣hearing on this issue this Tuesday. This is a pivotal moment.

Reauthorizing FirstNet is an opportunity for congress – ‍and for President Trump – to⁤ demonstrate a commitment⁤ to public safety and American⁤ strength. It’s a⁣ chance to double down on a vision‍ where our heroes have the resources they need ‍to protect our communities.

I can ⁤confidently say that FirstNet is one of ⁣the most consequential investments in public safety our nation has ever made. ‍ On ‍9/11, we⁣ asked our first⁢ responders‍ to do the impossible. ⁣Now, let’s give them the tools to fulfill‍ our promise:⁣ to never let a tragedy like that happen again.

Let’s get⁣ it done.

Ray Kelly is ⁣the longest-serving NYPD commissioner, leading from 1992 to 1994 and from 2002 to 2013.
