From 2G Limitations to the 3G Revolution
Before the smartphones you know and love, mobile connectivity was a far cry from today’s seamless experience. 2G networks, while groundbreaking for their time, were limited in speed - typically around 9.6 kilobits per second. This meant basic voice calls and text messaging were the primary functions.
The transition to 3G was transformative. It represented a leap in speed, enabling the first truly global standard for mobile video calls, internet browsing, online gaming, and streaming video content. Onoe played a pivotal role in this revolution, contributing significantly to the development and standardization of 3G technology while at NTT DoCoMo.
Pioneering the 4G Era & Beyond
Onoe’s vision didn’t stop with 3G. In 2009, he was instrumental in the launch of the world’s first 4G/LTE network by Ericsson and Sweden’s TeliaSonera. This new standard was approximately five times faster than 3G, unlocking a new world of possibilities.

Onoe’s commitment to collaboration extends to partnerships with organizations like the IEEE. He joined IEEE early in his career,encouraged by NTT’s policy,and continues his membership for the valuable networking and industry insights it provides.
The ITU and IEEE actively collaborate on critical initiatives. A recent example is the IEEE-ITU symposium on Achieving Climate resilience, focused on developing a technology-driven roadmap to combat the climate crisis.
“As I’ve seen throughout my career, it’s critically critically important that standards bodies actively collaborate if we hope to advance global technology,” Onoe emphasizes. Joint workshops, meetings, and informal discussions are all part of this ongoing effort.
