Bridging the Gap: SIGHT Program Empowers Sri Lankan Communities
Since its launch in 2014, the SIGHT program has been a catalyst for positive change, engaging over 500 students in more than 30 projects focused on addressing critical health needs in developing regions. Recently, this commitment manifested in a tangible way for residents of Haputale, a remote region in Sri Lanka’s Uva province.
Wesley Chan Hoi-chun, a freshman at HKUST’s School of science, spearheaded the implementation of a vital telemedicine system. Recognizing the significant barriers to healthcare access – often requiring lengthy and costly travel – Chan and his team developed software designed to streamline patient data management and facilitate remote video consultations.
This wasn’t simply a software deployment. Understanding the infrastructural challenges, the team proactively installed antennas to bolster internet connectivity, a crucial component for successful telemedicine. Crucially, they also provided comprehensive training to local healthcare workers, ensuring the system’s enduring integration into existing workflows.The impact has been immediate. Over 50 families have already benefited from the increased access to care, and a follow-up visit is planned for August to expand the program’s reach. Alongside the telemedicine initiative, the team launched a public health campaign focused on promoting clean water practices, recognizing the essential link between sanitation and overall well-being.
SmartCare: AI Revolutionizing Healthcare on the HKUST Campus
Innovation isn’t limited to international outreach.Within the HKUST campus, a groundbreaking AI-powered healthcare platform, SmartCare, is undergoing a six-month pilot program serving over 15,000 students, faculty, and staff. Developed by university researchers led by Professor Chen Hao from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, SmartCare represents a significant leap forward in healthcare efficiency and patient experience.
At the heart of SmartCare lies MedDr, a globally recognized open-source multimodal medical model. this powerful foundation allows SmartCare to comprehensively streamline the entire patient journey,from initial symptom assessment to post-consultation follow-up.Key features include:
Multilingual Live Transcription: Breaking down communication barriers and ensuring accurate record-keeping.
Intelligent Triage: Prioritizing patients based on the severity of their condition, optimizing resource allocation.
