Norris and Piastri Deliver Thrilling 1-2 Finish for McLaren in Hungary
Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri ignited teh Hungarian Grand Prix with a captivating duel, ultimately securing a dominant one-two finish for McLaren. The race showcased not only the team’s extraordinary pace but also their commitment to allowing their drivers to compete freely. It was a strategic gamble that paid off handsomely, marking McLaren’s fourth consecutive 1-2 result this season.
A Battle of Strategy and Tire Management
The closing laps were a masterclass in calculated risk and precise driving. Norris, on older, worn tires, found himself defending aggressively against a charging Piastri, who benefitted from a fresher rubber advantage.
Norris explained the intensity of the situation, stating that those laps were among the most challenging of the race. He was pushing the limits, acutely aware that even the slightest error could cost him the victory.
“I was just trying to not make a mistake,” Norris shared.”When the tire is so at the end of a stint, it was so easy to lock up.”
He detailed the delicate balance he had to strike, operating on a knife-edge between maximizing performance and avoiding a costly mistake.
“It just felt so easy to make a mistake, so I felt like I had to drive at 100 per cent,” he continued. “But if I drive at 98 per cent, I feel I’m under the limit and not getting anything out of the car. So there was the 99 per cent limit that was so hard to be on, but one I had to be on for as long as possible.”
mclaren’s Confidence in Their drivers
Team principal Andrea Stella and McLaren leadership demonstrated unwavering faith in their drivers throughout the race. This trust was evident in their decision to allow Norris and Piastri to race each other closely, even as the stakes grew higher.
Zak Brown, McLaren’s chief executive, expressed his delight with the outcome. “You’re never perfect in a race, but I think that was as close to perfect as you can get,” he said.
He lauded the performance of both drivers, the flawless pit stops, and the strategic brilliance that propelled Norris into contention. “The drivers were awesome, pit stops amazing, strategy was great to get Lando up there,” Brown added. “I couldn’t be prouder of this racing team.”
Brown highlighted the exciting dynamic of the race and the positive communication with Stella. “All under control. I had some good chats with Andrea during the race, it was very exciting. It was a great grand prix.”
He also emphasized the team’s adaptability, noting that the one-stop strategy wasn’t initially planned. “With Lando’s first lap, we weren’t planning a one-stop strategy, we didn’t know if we could but then it got to a point where let’s try. Knew it would come down to the last five laps there and good to see them race very hard, very clean and they’re both happy boys.”
