O’Connor Sets Sights on Vuelta a España GC After Tour de France Pursuit
Ben O’Connor enters the 2025 Vuelta a España with a clear ambition: to contend for the General Classification (GC). Having enjoyed a successful Vuelta last year, and feeling he left something on the table at the Tour de France, the Australian rider is laser-focused on the Spanish Grand Tour. “After the Tour, I had a great time here in the Vuelta a España last year,” O’Connor explained, outlining his strategic shift. “I missed a little bit on the GC in the Tour last year, so it’s time to get the GC done here.”
O’Connor’s approach is grounded in experience and a realistic assessment of the challenges ahead. He understands a grand Tour is a marathon, not a sprint, and requires consistent performance.
Early stages & Building Momentum
the race began with a promising showing on Limone Piemonte, a challenging uphill finish. Despite acknowledging the climb wasn’t ideally suited to his strengths, O’Connor was pleased with his performance. “But I was glad to be in more or less in position,” he said, emphasizing the importance of consistent positioning. “It actually felt pretty sweet, in the end I’m not really explosive so it was about holding the wheels.”
He characterized the ride as “decent enough,” viewing each stage as a step towards his ultimate goal. O’Connor recognizes the Vuelta is a day-by-day process, demanding meticulous execution. “It’s been a good start, so as I said, it’s about executing every single stage and than by the end hopefully you’re still in the fight for it,” he concluded.
The Decisive Second Week
Looking ahead, O’Connor identifies the second week as potentially race-defining. Stages featuring the Angliru (stage 13) and Farrapona (stage 14) climbs will be particularly crucial. “The Angliru, the Farrapona, these days are super crucial,” he stated.
Ultimately, success in these demanding stages will come down to power output. “In the end it’s about Watts per kilo, so you just have to go with it and go as fast as possible.”
Confidence Boost from Past Success
This year’s Vuelta feels different for O’Connor, fueled by the confidence gained from his strong performance in 2024. he now possesses a deeper understanding of his capabilities and what it takes to compete at the highest level. “This is all a bit more normal because of the year gone by,” he explained. “Now I really know what I can do,so if anything in that way it’s a bit easier.”
You can expect a more assured and strategic ride from O’Connor this time around. He’s not just participating; he’s targeting the GC.
The final outcome, though, remains uncertain untill the race concludes on September 14 in Madrid. The Vuelta a españa promises a thrilling battle, and Ben O’Connor is firmly positioned to be a key contender.Stay up-to-date with thorough coverage of the 2025 Vuelta a España.
