The San Francisco 49ers tight end recently experienced a career highlight, stepping up in a crucial game following an injury to a key teammate. But this wasn’t a sudden breakthrough; it was the culmination of years of focused dedication.
Tonges, 26, always understood his role within the team dynamic. He openly acknowledged preparing for scenarios where he might be called upon to fill a larger role, particularly if starting tight end George Kittle were unavailable. “I kind of know this is my role if George goes down,” he stated, emphasizing his consistent focus on mastering the nuances of the offense, especially on third downs and passing plays.

Tonges’s path to this point wasn’t straightforward. He graduated from Los Gatos High School in 2017 and spent four years at Cal, securing four touchdowns from 2018 to 2021. Despite going undrafted in 2022, he earned opportunities with the Chicago Bears, appearing in four games and logging 34 offensive snaps.
Though,his NFL journey involved navigating waivers and practice squads. Released by the Bears in August 2023, Tonges quickly found a new home with the 49ers, initially joining their practice squad. Last season,he contributed to all 16 games,primarily excelling on special teams.

Quarterback Brock Purdy highlighted the consistency tonges displayed throughout the previous year and training camp. “He’s been a consistent guy all throughout last year and camp,” Purdy explained. “George goes down today, and then, boom, (Tonges is) ready for his opportunity.”
This sentiment was echoed by running back Christian McCaffrey, who praised Tonges’s work ethic and attention to detail. “He’s a guy that’s made of the right stuff,” McCaffrey said. “Practices really hard, attention to detail is great, willing to block, does all the little things right.”

For Tonges, this moment represents more than just a professional achievement. Growing up just 20 minutes from Levi’s Stadium, playing for the 49ers is a lifelong dream realized. “It’s pretty awesome,” Tonges shared.”Growing up 20 minutes from Levi’s, it’s just your dream come true.”
He expressed deep appreciation for his teammates and the team environment. “wouldn’t want to play for anyone else,” he added. “I love these guys. I love this locker room, and just want to keep rolling.”
