Army Deploys Cutting-Edge ‘Launched Effects‘ Systems to JBLM, Pioneering Future of Battlefield Awareness & Precision Strike

What are Launched Effects?
Launched Effects represent a new class of compact, expendable systems – exemplified by platforms like the Atlas 600 from AEVEX aerospace – designed to be deployed from ground vehicles or units. These aren’t simply drones; they are semi-autonomous sensor platforms intended to operate in coordinated “wolfpacks,” extending a commander’s reach for surveillance, target acquisition, and, crucially, precision strikes ahead of traditional forces. This proactive approach dramatically reduces risk to soldiers while providing critical situational awareness in areas previously inaccessible or to perilous for manned operations.
A Game Changer for Contested Environments
The core advantage of Launched Effects lies in their ability to operate effectively in environments saturated with enemy air defenses. Unlike traditional Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) or loitering munitions, these systems are designed to be expendable. This allows for aggressive forward deployment, gathering intelligence and identifying threats without the need for costly retrieval or risking the loss of valuable assets.
“This is the first delivery of launched effects to a U.S. army Forces Command unit informing future deliveries, materiel progress, and launched effects integration in the army’s formations,” explained Lt. Col. Patrick Gargan, Launched Effects Lead for the Future Vertical Lift Cross-Functional Team. ”By receiving Soldier insights early, we are laying the foundation for a seamless fielding of this capability, which will revolutionize how divisions operate in contested environments and enhance the Army’s overall readiness and lethality.”
Realistic Testing at JBLM & the Role of Yuma Proving ground
The JBLM demonstration wasn’t a theoretical exercise.The Army meticulously recreated a realistic battlefield scenario, deploying full-scale mockups of adversary equipment, including a Russian MSTA-S 152mm self-propelled howitzer. This commitment to realism underscores the Army’s dedication to preparing for potential future conflicts.
The exercise was heavily supported by personnel from the U.S. Army Yuma Proving Ground (YPG), a critical partner in validating the technology and preparing it for widespread deployment. YPG’s role extended beyond simply providing targets. they were responsible for the logistical challenge of transporting and emplacing these large-scale mockups, as well as simulating the electronic warfare environment.
“We shipped the targets commercially to Joint Base Lewis-McChord, offloaded them, and emplaced them in the target locations provided by the customer,” stated Carlos Molina, a test officer at YPG. “All of these targets were driven by requirements for these large events. They not only support local testing, but other U.S.Army requirements.” YPG also deployed teams to simulate radar emissions from opposed air defense systems, further enhancing the exercise’s fidelity.
Building on Previous Successes: EDGE 2024 & Beyond
This JBLM demonstration builds upon the momentum generated by previous Experimental Demonstration Gateway Events (EDGE) held at YPG in 2023 and 2024. These earlier events focused on validating the long-range autonomy of the Launched Effects systems and integrating them into a complete operational picture.
Brig. Gen. Cain Baker, director of the Future Vertical Lift cross-Functional Team, highlighted the indispensable role of YPG in the Army’s experimentation and data collection efforts. “YPG was essential for us to have the simulated threat array to conduct the experiment at echelon that would replicate an enemy capability that we would potentially face in the future,” he emphasized following the EDGE 2024 event.
