Terence crawford Dismisses Ilia Topuria Challenge: A Clash of Worlds, But No Interest
Terence Crawford’s historic dismantling of Canelo Alvarez to claim undisputed super middleweight champion status has predictably ignited talk of future opponents. However, one name on the challenger list isn’t even registering on Crawford’s radar: UFC featherweight champion Ilia Topuria. The rising MMA star has publicly called for a boxing match with Crawford, a proposition swiftly and decisively rejected by the newly crowned champion.
topuria, 28, has been vocal about his desire to test his skills in the boxing ring.He recently suggested he could knock out Crawford, prompting a dismissive response from the boxing superstar, who labeled the UFC champion as “delusional and drunk.” The back-and-forth escalated over the weekend, fueled by a shared musical preference.
The source of contention? Crawford’s ring walk to “Canción del Mariachi” – a song Topuria also uses for his Octagon entrance. While Crawford shrugged off the coincidence, Topuria took umbrage, firing off a social media challenge: “Whenever you want, I’ll teach you how to dance that mariachi in the ring.” He even offered to take on Canelo Alvarez after Crawford.
Crawford, though, isn’t buying it. He views Topuria’s challenge as a blatant attempt to capitalize on his recent victory, a “clout chase” motivated by a lucrative fight check. During an appearance on “The Ariel Helwani Show,” Crawford was blunt: there’s simply nothing to discuss.
The three-division undisputed champion further questioned Topuria’s sincerity, pointing out a missed opportunity for a direct conversation. Crawford revealed he encountered Topuria at the UFC Performance Institute a few months ago, and Topuria didn’t mention his desire for a fight. This lack of directness, according to Crawford, feels “fake.”
Crawford is understandably skeptical of the potential financial benefits. He directly questioned the potential payout, stating he needs to understand the financial incentive. More importantly, he firmly believes Topuria doesn’t represent the same level of crossover appeal as conor mcgregor, whose 2017 boxing match with Floyd Mayweather Jr. generated massive revenue.
“He’s nowhere near on the level of Conor McGregor,” Crawford stated emphatically.”Stop it. Don’t even compare him to Conor.” Crawford admitted he’s never even seen Topuria fight, despite being a regular viewer of MMA.
This isn’t about a lack of respect for Topuria’s accomplishments in the UFC. It’s a pragmatic assessment from a fighter at the pinnacle of his sport. Crawford doesn’t see a competitive advantage, a significant financial gain, or a genuine sporting rivalry in facing “El Matador.” For now, the undisputed super middleweight champion is focused on cementing his legacy within the boxing world, and a detour into a crossover bout with Ilia Topuria simply isn’t on the cards.
