Colorado Cannabis: A deep Dive into Labeling Accuracy, Potency, and the Emerging Cannabinoid Landscape
The burgeoning cannabis industry, now legal in a growing number of states, promises consumers access to a diverse range of products. However, a recent study from the University of Colorado Boulder reveals a critical gap between advertised potency and actual cannabinoid content, notably in flower products.This examination, lead by researchers at CU Boulder‘s Department of Psychology and Neuroscience and conducted in partnership with MedPharm, sheds light on the challenges of accurate labeling and the need for a more comprehensive understanding of the cannabis plant’s complex chemical profile. This article provides an in-depth analysis of the findings, their implications for consumers and the industry, and potential pathways toward improved regulation.
The Study: Unveiling Discrepancies in Colorado’s Cannabis Market
The research, spearheaded by Gregory Giordano, a professional research assistant, involved a “secret shopper” approach. 277 cannabis products were discreetly purchased from 52 dispensaries spanning 19 Colorado counties. The sample focused on 178 flower products (including loose flower and pre-rolled joints) and 99 smokable concentrates - ranging from refined distillates to customary hash and waxy extracts. Crucially,edibles were excluded from this initial phase,allowing for a focused assessment of smokable cannabis.
To ensure objectivity, product labels were photographed, and samples were assigned numerical identifiers before undergoing rigorous chemical analysis by MedPharm chemists blind to the original labeling. This meticulous methodology minimized bias and provided a reliable assessment of actual THC and other cannabinoid levels.
THC Potency: A Dramatic Increase and Concerning Inaccuracies
The results paint a clear picture: THC potency has risen dramatically as the 1980s, when marijuana typically contained around 8% THC.The current study found an average of 21% THC in flower products and a considerably higher 71% in concentrates, with some reaching a potent 84%.
“THC content has increased significantly, and we certainly know that greater THC exposure is highly likely associated with greater risks, including risk of cannabis use disorder and some mental health issues,” explains lead researcher Dr.lucy Bidwell. This underscores the importance of accurate labeling, allowing consumers to make informed decisions about their consumption.
However, the study revealed a significant problem: approximately 44% of flower products failed to meet the state’s labeling accuracy standard – defined as being within 15% of the stated THC content. Of these inaccuracies, 54 products overstated their THC levels, while 23 understated them. Both scenarios pose risks.

Why the Discrepancy? A Complex Web of factors
The researchers explored potential reasons for the inconsistencies. While previous studies in other states have pointed to potential inflation of THC potency by third-party testing labs seeking to attract business, the colorado study suggests a more nuanced picture.
The inherent complexity of the cannabis plant itself plays a significant role. Concentrates, typically derived from homogenous oils, are easier to analyze accurately. Flower, on the other hand, is a heterogeneous material, meaning cannabinoid distribution varies throughout the plant. This inherent variability makes precise testing more challenging.
Furthermore, subtle variations in testing protocols between labs could contribute to discrepancies. Standardizing these protocols could significantly improve labeling accuracy.
Beyond THC: The Untapped Potential of the Cannabinoid Spectrum
The study extended beyond THC, analyzing several other cannabinoids, including cannabidiol (CBD), cannabigerol (CBG), and cannabigerolic acid (CBGA). Colorado law mandates CBD labeling, and the study found compliance rates of 80-85%. However, a striking finding was that only 16% of products provided details on other cannabinoids.
This is a significant oversight, given the growing body of research suggesting potential therapeutic benefits of cannabinoids beyond THC and CBD. Notably, CBG and CBGA – associated with anti-inflammatory and anti-anxiety properties – were found to be more abundant than CBD in many products.
