Ireland Awaits: A Real-Time Guide to the Presidential Election Count
The polls have closed, and ireland now holds its breath as the count for the Presidential election begins. Following yesterday’s voting, ballot boxes were secured overnight in 32 count centers across the country. Here’s a complete breakdown of what to expect as we move toward declaring the next Uachtarán na hÉireann (President of Ireland).
The Turnout Question
A surge in voters was observed leading up to the 10 p.m. closing time. However, whether this translates to a turnout exceeding the 43.8% seen in 2018 remains to be seen. Official figures will be released later today, providing a definitive answer.
Counting Begins: 9 AM Sharp
Ballot boxes will be opened promptly at 9 a.m. this morning in those 32 count centers nationwide. The initial phase involves sorting ballots based on first-preference votes.
Expect tally operators to be present in many centers, providing early, unofficial estimates of candidate performance. Keep in mind these tallies are preliminary and can vary in accuracy.
The Impact of Spoilt Votes
A notable element of this election is the active campaign to spoil votes – a protest against the candidate field or lack thereof. This could considerably impact the counting process.
Here’s what you need to know about spoilt votes:
* Adjudication Required: Each spoilt ballot must be individually reviewed by polling clerks and candidate representatives.
* Potential delays: This process adds considerable time to the overall count.
* 2018 Precedent: In the last Presidential election,18,400 votes (approximately 1.2% of the total) were deemed spoilt.
* Potential Increase: Recent polls suggest up to 6% of voters may spoil their ballots this year, possibly leading to 70,000 votes requiring examination.
First Count & The Quota
The first official count from each constituency won’t be available until late morning or early afternoon. Results will be transmitted to Presidential Returning Officer Barry Ryan at Dublin Castle.
Once all constituency results are received, Mr. Ryan will announce the national first count. This is anticipated to occur in the mid-to-late afternoon.
The winning threshold, known as the quota, is calculated as 50% of the valid poll plus one.
* Immediate Victory: If a candidate surpasses the quota on the first count, or is demonstrably ahead such that eliminating the lowest-polling candidate wouldn’t change the outcome, they will be declared the winner.
* Second Count: Otherwise, a second count will commence in the count centers. in this scenario, the result won’t be known until late evening.
What Happens Next?
If a second count is necessary, the process involves redistributing the votes of the eliminated candidate(s) based on the next preference indicated on the ballots. This continues until a candidate reaches the required quota.
