Nokia Powers Next-Generation Rail & Terrestrial Networks in Bangkok & the Middle East, Boosting Connectivity & Safety
Nokia continues to solidify its position as a leading technology provider, announcing significant network deployments in both Southeast Asia and the Middle East. These projects, focused on enhancing railway communications in Bangkok and building a high-capacity terrestrial network spanning Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, demonstrate Nokia’s commitment to innovation and its ability to deliver robust, future-proof solutions for critical infrastructure.
Transforming Rail Safety & Efficiency in Bangkok with a Cutting-Edge Network
Bangkok’s expanding mass rapid transit (MRT) system is set to benefit from a state-of-the-art railway communications network, deployed in partnership with ST Engineering and First One Systems. This project centers around the upcoming 35.9 km MRT Orange Line, slated for completion in 2030,which will connect the east and west of the Thai capital with a combination of underground and elevated tracks.
The core of this conversion is a new Internet Protocol/Multi-Protocol Label switching (IP/MPLS)-based mission-critical backbone transmission network (BTN). This isn’t simply an upgrade; it’s a essential shift towards digital railway operations, aligning with a global trend to improve efficiency, reliability, and, crucially, safety.
Nokia will be deploying two BTNs – 10G and 40G - designed to handle the demanding data requirements of modern rail systems. This high-capacity, low-latency network will underpin a wide range of vital applications, including:
* CCTV Surveillance: Enhanced security and real-time monitoring.
* Public Announcements & Passenger Information Displays: Improved communication and passenger experience.
* Radio Communication: Reliable connectivity for train operators and control personnel.
* Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA): Real-time control and monitoring of critical railway infrastructure.
The solution leverages Nokia’s proven portfolio, including the 7250 Interconnect Router, nokia Service Platform, and 7210 Service Access System.Beyond simply providing the technology, Nokia’s professional services will ensure seamless integration and ongoing network optimization. This focus on simplified operations and real-time network visibility will empower BEM to proactively manage its infrastructure and respond swiftly to any issues.
“We are honoured to be part of this landmark project alongside Nokia and ST Engineering,” stated Terdsak Kijjatikankun, CEO of First One Systems, highlighting the collaborative effort and local expertise contributing to the project’s success. “Our deep understanding of the local landscape, combined with Nokia’s proven technology and ST Engineering’s system integration excellence, ensures that this mission-critical communication system will meet the highest international standards.”
GBI Selects Nokia to Build a Resilient, High-Capacity Terrestrial Network Connecting Europe, the Middle East & Asia
In the Middle East, Gulf Bridge International (GBI) is embarking on an ambitious project to establish a new, alternative terrestrial route through iraq. This strategic move aims to bypass conventional, often congested, subsea corridors, significantly enhancing network diversity and resilience for regional and international data traffic.
GBI has chosen Nokia’s optical networking solution, specifically the 1830 GX optical networking platform,to build this next-generation network. This platform is capable of delivering over 50 Tbps of capacity, catering to the rapidly growing digital economy and the increasing demand for scalable bandwidth across the region.
The new network will offer considerable benefits to cloud and content providers, telecom operators, and enterprises, including:
* Reduced Latency: Faster data transmission for improved submission performance.
* Increased Capacity: Ability to handle growing data volumes.
* Improved Network Availability: Enhanced resilience and reliability.
This project is particularly significant as it establishes a new pathway for data transmission, reducing reliance on existing infrastructure and bolstering regional connectivity.
“The award of Nokia for this new network represents a major step forward in delivering enhanced connectivity to our customers and partners,” said Ahmad Mohamed AL-Kuwari, CEO of Gulf Bridge International. “By collaborating with Nokia and leveraging the latest 1830 GX platform, we are creating a robust, high-capacity network that strengthens regional resilience and supports digital transformation across key markets. this project reinforces GBI’s commitment to enabling reliable, high-quality infrastructure that fuels economic growth and innovation.”
Nokia: driving the Future of Connectivity
These deployments underscore Nokia’s leadership in delivering innovative networking solutions for critical infrastructure.By combining cutting-edge technology with strategic partnerships and a deep understanding of regional needs, nokia is empowering organizations like BEM and GBI to build more reliable, efficient, and future-proof networks
