“I do things that aren’t the norm, which could throw him off his game,” Wardley explains. This unconventional style is central to his strategy.
Potential Path to a title Shot
Currently, Wardley holds the WBO ’interim’ title, and promoter Frank Warren has suggested a potential upgrade to full world champion status should Usyk vacate his belts. While he would accept this elevation, Wardley insists he wants to earn the championship through a direct confrontation with Usyk in the ring.
Interestingly, the two fighters have shared the ring before, albeit under very different circumstances. Back in 2018, Wardley received an unexpected invitation to spar with Usyk, then a reigning cruiserweight champion, in Kyiv.
He recalls the experience as a valuable, if humbling, learning chance.”I remember getting punched up a lot, to be honest,” Wardley admits. “I was very new, and even back then he already had a wealth of experience and boxing IQ.”
A Changed Fighter, A Renewed Challenge
Seven years later, Wardley is a vastly improved fighter, and his mindset has shifted dramatically. He’s no longer content to simply gain experience.
He’s steadfast to make a significant impact. “I’d put everything I have into it,” Wardley asserts. “If it all comes off how it should, one way or another, Oleksandr Usyk will know he’s been in a fight with Fabio Wardley.”
