Australia claims Inaugural Hanwha Aerospace Championship Title in Dramatic Fashion
Australia has secured it’s first victory at the Hanwha Aerospace Championship, a thrilling match-play tournament held at the New Korea Country Club. The team overcame a determined World squad, ultimately clinching the win at the 17th hole of the second singles match.
This triumph marks a significant milestone for Australian golf, especially considering their near miss in 2023. Last year, they fell to Thailand, led by then-No. 1 ranked Jeeno Thitikul, in a closely contested final at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco.
World Team Finishes Strong, Despite Loss
despite the final defeat, the World team showcased impressive performances throughout the tournament. They secured third place thanks to decisive victories from Charley Hull and Lydia Ko.
* Hull dominated Ayaka Furue with a 4 and 3 win.
* Ko sealed the third-place finish with a 3 and 2 victory over Rio Takeda.
Though, japan narrowed the gap with a foursomes win, as Mao Saigo and Miyu Yamashita defeated Brooke henderson and Wei-Ling Hsu 4 and 3.
Semifinal Battles and a Path to the Final
The road to the final was hard-fought for both teams. Australia’s Kyriacou and Kim edged past the World team’s Wei-ling Hsu and Lydia Ko on the 20th hole, securing their spot in the championship match.
Earlier in the day, the singles matches saw a split result.Hull initially put the World team ahead with a 2 and 1 win over Hannah Green, but Minjee lee responded with a 1-up victory against Canada’s Brooke Henderson, leveling the score.
United States’ Straightforward Route to the Final
The top-seeded United States team enjoyed a more direct path to the final. Yin secured a 2 and 1 win over Japan’s Takeda, while Noh sealed the American’s place with a commanding 4 and 2 victory over Yamashita, punctuated by wins on the 13th, 15th, and 16th holes.
Japan did manage a consolation victory, ending the United States’ perfect record with a 1-up win in the foursomes, courtesy of Furue and Saigo over Lilia Vu and Lauren Coughlin.
Tournament Format & Global Competition
You may be wondering how the tournament unfolded. Seven countries and a “rest of the world” team competed,divided into two pools. Team composition was determined by the women’s world rankings, ensuring a high level of competition.
The top two teams from each pool advanced to Sunday’s semifinals and final, which consisted of one foursomes (alternate shot) match and two singles matches. This format demands both individual skill and strong team synergy.
Looking Ahead on the LPGA Tour
The LPGA’s Asian swing continues to build momentum. Just last week, Sei Young Kim claimed victory at the BMW Ladies Championship, also held in South Korea. The tour now heads to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, before concluding in Shiga, Japan, from Nov. 6-9.
