Makhachev Eyes Topuria Clash After Welterweight Debut, Hints at Historic White House Bout
Islam Makhachev, the former UFC lightweight king, is laser-focused on his welterweight journey, but a potential rematch with Ilia Topuria remains firmly on his radar. He’s preparing to challenge Jack Della Maddalena for the welterweight championship at UFC 322 on November 14th at Madison Square Garden. This move comes after Makhachev relinquished his 155-pound title in May.
Topuria subsequently claimed the vacant lightweight crown in June, delivering a stunning knockout victory over Charles Oliveira. Currently boasting an undefeated record of 17-0, Topuria has publicly expressed his willingness to move up to 170 pounds for a showdown with Makhachev should he secure another win.
A Potential Blockbuster at the white House?
Makhachev welcomes the challenge,particularly if it unfolds at a uniquely historic venue. “I saw the [Oliveira] fight; he’s good,” Makhachev stated. “He wants to fight at the White House, and I also want to be there.”
The UFC is reportedly planning a notable event at the White House next summer, and Makhachev believes a clash between the top two pound-for-pound fighters would be the perfect centerpiece.He questions, “Which fight is going to be bigger than this?”
Currently, no fights are officially confirmed for the White House card, which is tentatively scheduled for June 14th. Topuria is expected to defend his lightweight title at least once before considering a weight class jump.
The Toll of the Weight Cut
Makhachev’s decision to move up to welterweight stems from the grueling demands of making 155 pounds. He successfully defended his lightweight title four times, but the process took a significant toll.
“No one who cuts like [22 pounds], thay never recover 100%,” Makhachev explained. He further elaborated that he consistently felt depleted, operating at only 60-70% of his full capacity due to the weight cut’s lingering effects.
Ultimately, Makhachev believes competing at a more natural weight will allow you to witness his true potential inside the Octagon. This transition represents a new chapter for the decorated fighter, one that could culminate in a landmark fight against Topuria on the grandest of stages.
