The Story Behind “All I Left Behind”
I’ve found that songwriting frequently enough unfolds in unexpected places. “All I Left Behind” is a perfect example of that, as it blossomed from a collaboration with the incredibly talented Kate and Anna McGarrigle. Around the time I was deeply immersed in the Red Dirt Girl project, I was actively writing new material.
I don’t frequently co-write, but I’ve always held a deep admiration for the work of Kate and Anna. I began spending time at thier childhood home in Saint-sauveur, just outside of Montreal, seeking inspiration and a creative space. I had the initial seeds of the song while working on Red Dirt Girl, and then I brought those ideas to them, and we completed it together.
Interestingly, this collaboration coincided with another project: an album of duets with Linda Ronstadt, produced by Glyn Johns in Tucson in 1999 – Western Wall: The Tucson Sessions. The McGarrigles generously lent their beautiful voices as background vocalists on that recording. We were fortunate enough to have them join us on stage for some of those performances, which was truly special.
As far as I know, thereS only one official recording of “All I Left Behind,” making it a unique and cherished piece.
A New Chapter and a Final Album
You might be wondering why I’ve decided not to record another studio album. Its simply because I’ve accumulated a vast catalog of songs over the years. I don’t tour extensively, typically performing with the Red Dirt Boys about once a month.
I also dedicate a meaningful amount of time to benefit concerts, often with the Red Dirt Boys, and frequently with a rotating cast of incredibly generous friends who volunteer their time and talent. Drawing from five decades of songwriting, I find myself with an abundance of material. I genuinely feel my time in the recording studio has come to a natural conclusion.
Currently, I’m channeling my creative energy into a memoir. It’s a demanding process, but I dedicate a couple of hours to it each morning. I’m working with an editor who is keeping me focused, and I’m hopeful to have it completed within the next year.
