Hirokazu Kore-eda‘s ‘Sheep in the Box’ Acquired by Neon for US, UK & Australia
Neon has secured the rights to distribute acclaimed Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda’s upcoming film, Sheep in the Box, across the United States, United kingdom, and Australia. This collaboration marks another partnership between Neon and Kore-eda, following their triumphant work together on the 2022 feature Broker.
Filming is currently underway, promising a theatrical release nationwide in the US. The film stars Haruka Ayase and Daigo, bringing together established and emerging talent.
A Near-Future Exploration of Technology and Family
Sheep in the Box delves into a compelling near-future scenario. It centers on a couple who integrate a highly advanced humanoid robot into their lives, welcoming it as their son. The film’s title draws inspiration from Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s beloved 1943 novel, The Little Prince, hinting at themes of innocence and connection.
Kore-eda has spoken about the core ideas driving the project. He initially explored the concept of “bringing the dead back to life using the latest technology.” This fascination stemmed from observing similar concepts gaining traction in Japanese media.

Haruka ayase returns to collaborate with Kore-eda, having previously starred in his 2015 film Our Little Sister. Daigo, a well-known Japanese comedian, makes his feature film debut in Sheep in the Box.
The film is a collaborative production. producers include Fuji Television Network, gaga Corporation, Toho, and AOI Pro. International sales are being handled by Gaga and Goodfellas, with Sarah Colvin of Neon negotiating the deal.
