Elon Musk announced on July 22, 2026, that his xAI platform, Grok Imagine, will release a historically accurate
feature-length film adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey before the end of the year. The announcement follows Musk’s vocal criticism of Christopher Nolan’s recent adaptation, which has achieved significant global box office success and near-universal acclaim.
Musk’s Challenge to the Nolan Adaptation
The announcement from the xAI founder arrived via a post on X, where Musk quote-shared a three-minute AI-generated clip of a dialogue scene between Odysseus and the nymph Calypso. In the post, Musk declared: Before this year ends, Grok Imagine will make a full-length movie of The Odyssey that is historically accurate and true to the art of Homer.
The move serves as a continuation of Musk’s public efforts to challenge Christopher Nolan’s recently released epic, which stars Matt Damon as Odysseus and Anne Hathaway as Penelope.
Musk’s opposition to the Nolan film has focused primarily on casting decisions. The tech mogul previously attacked the casting of Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra, and trans actor Elliot Page as Sinon. Musk alleged in posts that Nolan’s casting choices were driven by a desire for awards, stating that the director wants the awards
and has lost his integrity.
In March, Musk wrote that Chris Nolan is an anti-White racist.
In response to the pre-release backlash, Nyong’o stated: Our cast is representative of the world. I’m not spending my time thinking of a defence. The criticism will exist whether I engage with it or not.
Nolan has remained dismissive of the discourse surrounding his film. Regarding the controversy, he stated: These conversations that happen before people see the film – they’re always irrelevant, because no one having them knows what the film actually is yet.
Box Office Performance and Industry Reception
Despite the online campaign spearheaded by Musk, Nolan’s The Odyssey has seen substantial commercial success. The film earned US$264 million (£196m, A$378m) in its worldwide opening weekend, putting it on track to potentially become the director’s highest-grossing film to date. The film also holds a 97% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The online backlash ginned up against the non-white and trans actors failed to make a dent in its box office or critical success.
Nolan himself has been withering in his assessment of the likely impact of artificial intelligence on film-making. Addressing the technology, Nolan said: The idea that it replaces human beings wholesale and human creativity, to me it’s a nonsense.
He further added: I’ve never seen a technology that’s been so successfully adopted by Wall Street and by investors and by tech companies that the public has so thoroughly rejected.
Capabilities and Limitations of Grok Imagine
The tool Musk intends to use for his adaptation, Grok Imagine, is part of an AI assistant developed by xAI that integrates directly with the X platform, enabling it to access live discussions and information on the platform. The system allows users to generate short animated videos from text prompts, animate still images, and natively generate synchronised audio, including background music, ambient noise, and sound effects. While the tool currently supports video clips of up to 30 seconds, Musk’s goal of producing a full-length feature by the end of the year represents an ambitious expansion of the technology’s current reported capabilities.
The quest for historical accuracy
in an adaptation of The Odyssey has been met with skepticism. The Odyssey is a nearly 2,800-year-old epic poem featuring cyclopes, six-headed monsters, and a witch who turns sailors into pigs—elements that are considered to be works of fiction. Critics have noted that because Homer did not have access to video files or AI, an authentic experience of the work would require reading the text in ancient Greek.
