Sustaining Independent Middle East Analysis: A Call for Support from MERIP
For decades, the Middle East Research adn Information Project (MERIP) has been a vital, independent voice offering critical analysis of a complex and often misrepresented region. Recently, at a gathering at Busboys and Poets, we celebrated this legacy – the community fostered by founder Joe, and the dedication of our staff, contributors, and allies across the country. This event underscored a fundamental truth: impactful scholarship and informed public discourse thrive only with a strong, supportive community.
Even as our work increasingly extends beyond geographical boundaries through remote collaboration, community remains at our core. The past year alone has been remarkably productive, made possible entirely by the generosity of readers like you. We published three impactful issues of Middle East Report – exploring critical themes and offering nuanced perspectives – launched a dynamic podcast, hosted insightful events, and unveiled a redesigned website.
Looking ahead to 2024, MERIP is poised to expand its reach and deepen its analysis. We aim to leverage our new tools and strengthened infrastructure to provide even more incisive commentary on the pressing challenges facing the Middle East and the world. The region demands it.
The past year has been marked by profound shifts and escalating crises. while the initial shock of the syrian regime’s upheaval has passed, new complexities have emerged under President al-Shara’a – including the urgent need for accountability for past crimes, ongoing Israeli aggression, and the pursuit of Kurdish self-determination. Simultaneously, the ongoing genocide in Gaza, accelerating dispossession in Palestine, and Israel’s escalating regional conflict with Iran (manifesting in attacks on Lebanon, yemen, and Qatar) have created a landscape of immense suffering and instability. Even a fragile ceasefire in Gaza is routinely violated, leaving everyday life shrouded in uncertainty.
MERIP is committed to addressing these developments with rigorous analysis and by amplifying the voices of dissidents and activists on the ground. Though,our ability to continue this crucial work depends directly on your support.
We operate with a lean, dedicated team – relying heavily on volunteer contributions from our editorial committee and employing a fully part-time staff. This allows us to produce a leading publication like Middle East Report on a fraction of the budget enjoyed by our peers. But even the most committed team has its limits.
