A dedicated mountain biker, he honed his fitness and competitive spirit off-road. “I always felt a lot of pressure with mountain biking, just as I’d been doing it for so long and felt like I had something to live up to,” he explains. It was a surprising revelation that led him to explore road cycling, where he quickly found a refreshing freedom.
The chance with the Hincapie proteam arose in May, initiated by Joey, a key figure in the team’s scouting efforts. “They were looking for young American riders with a good personality and potential,” Campbell recalls. A few months of conversation culminated in a call from George Hincapie himself, offering a two-year contract. “It was a crazy experience,” Campbell admits,”going from dedicated mountain biker to getting a call from George Hincapie for this new American ProTeam.”
Focusing on Progress and Experience in 2026
For the 2026 season, Campbell’s primary focus is on absorbing the nuances of the professional peloton. “My main goal is getting experience, learning my role within the team, and staying healthy and fit throughout the year,” he states. He’s eager to immerse himself in road racing, with an eye towards exploring gravel events in the future, and even revisiting his mountain biking roots down the line.
Campbell identifies as a breakaway rider, possessing a style particularly well-suited to the challenging terrain of the classics. He believes his biggest asset right now isn’t a specific physical attribute, but a mental one: confidence. “I feel like I have nothing to prove on the road,” he says. “I can just go out there and do really good and nobody knows me.That’s a big advantage.” This relaxed approach, born from the pressures of his previous discipline, allows him to race with a freedom many established pros envy.
Dream Races and U23 Aspirations
When asked about dream races, two stand out: Paris-Roubaix and Strade Bianche.”Those two are the huge ones in my mind,” Campbell says with palpable excitement.”Paris-Roubaix would be insane, a bucket list item for sure.” These iconic races, known for their brutal conditions and historical meaning, perfectly align with his aggressive riding style.
Looking ahead to his time as a U23 rider, Campbell has three key objectives. First,he wants to learn from the experienced riders and staff around him. Second, he’s keen to explore his potential in time trialling, believing his physique could be well-suited to the discipline, despite having never used a TT bike before. and perhaps most importantly, he wants to demonstrate that there are multiple pathways to professional cycling.
“I wasn’t on one of the big road development teams,” he points out, “but if you work hard and don’t give up, you can cross over and still have success.” This message is particularly resonant in a sport often dominated by established development pipelines.
Beyond the Bike: A Life Well-Rounded
Ethan’s life extends beyond the demands of training and racing. Back in Georgia, he found joy in building trails with friends, a testament to his passion for cycling in all its forms. Now based in Germany,he and his sister enjoy exploring the country’s rich history and vibrant culture,particularly its Christmas markets. He also enjoys hiking and, with his sister, baking – though he humbly admits he’s primarily a helper in the kitchen.
