Nokia Bell Labs, a historic hub of technological advancement, recently commemorated seven groundbreaking achievements with IEEE Milestone plaques. This recognition underscores the lasting impact of research conducted at Bell Labs, shaping the technologies we rely on today. The dedication event, sponsored by the IEEE North Jersey Section, celebrated innovations spanning from the foundations of deep learning to pioneering microprocessor design.
The Rise of Deep Learning: Convolutional Neural Networks
Perhaps the most impactful recognition centers on the development of convolutional neural networks (CNNs). These networks are the cornerstone of modern computer vision, powering everything from image recognition to self-driving cars.
Yann LeCun, VP and Chief AI Scientist at Meta (formerly Facebook), frequently acknowledges Bell Labs as the birthplace of the modern neural network’s ability to “see.” The IEEE Milestone plaque specifically highlights:
* 1989 research: Established deep learning as a core branch of artificial intelligence.
* key contributions by Yann LeCun: Developed the theory and practical request of CNNs.

The Bellmac-32: A Monumental Feat of Engineering
IEEE Life Fellow Sung-Mo “Steve” kang, a lead developer of the Bellmac-32, shared insights into the challenges and triumphs of creating this pioneering microprocessor.
The Bellmac-32, boasting 150,000 transistors, was considered “massive” for its time in 1981. Kang explained that replicating this feat today is achievable for a student in a single semester using modern CAD tools. Though, back then, it required the dedication of a hundred engineers.
The chip was also a leader in CMOS chip architecture, introducing several other firsts in the field.

You can now view plaques recognizing all seven IEEE Milestones in the lobby of the nokia Bell Labs facility in Murray Hill, New Jersey. This serves as a constant reminder of the institution’s rich history and ongoing commitment to innovation.
