Terror in Bondi: Gunmen Attack Hanukkah Festivity, Leaving at Least 11 Dead
Sydney, Australia - A horrific act of terror unfolded Sunday evening at Bondi Beach, Sydney, as two gunmen opened fire on a large gathering celebrating Chanukah by the Sea, a hanukkah event. Australian authorities have confirmed at least 11 fatalities and 29 injuries, declaring the attack a targeted act of terrorism against the Jewish community.
One gunman was fatally shot by responding police officers. The second suspect was apprehended but remains in critical condition.The swift response from law enforcement prevented an even greater tragedy, but the attack has left a nation reeling and a community in mourning.
The incident began around 6:45 p.m. local time, with emergency services rushing to Campbell parade following reports of gunfire. Witnesses described scenes of chaos and panic as hundreds of people attending the festive event scrambled for safety.
“Everyone just dropped all their possessions and everything and where running and people were crying and it was just horrible,” recounted Lachlan Moran, a bystander from Melbourne, to the associated Press.He described hearing sustained gunfire for approximately five minutes.
Footage circulating online, reportedly captured by a member of the public, appears to show a civilian bravely tackling and disarming one of the attackers before turning the weapon against him. This act of courage, while remarkable, underscores the terrifying nature of the assault.
New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon confirmed the attack was specifically designed to target sydney’s jewish community. “This attack was designed to target Sydney’s Jewish community,” he stated, citing both the event targeted and the weapons used as justification for the terrorism designation. Premier Chris Minns echoed this sentiment,expressing profound sorrow for the Jewish community and acknowledging the immense pain they are experiencing.
“Our heart bleeds for Australia’s Jewish community tonight,” Minns told reporters. “I can only imagine the pain that they’re feeling right now to see their loved ones killed as they celebrate this ancient holiday.”
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the attack as “shocking and distressing,” and pledged support for those affected. “Police and emergency responders are on the ground working to save lives,” he saeid in a statement.
The investigation is ongoing, with specialist officers examining “a number of suspicious items” found near the scene, including a potential improvised explosive device discovered in one of the suspect’s vehicles. Authorities are working to determine the full extent of the plot and any potential accomplices.
This attack is particularly jarring for Australia, a nation with some of the strictest gun control laws in the world.The 1996 Port Arthur massacre,which claimed 35 lives,prompted sweeping reforms that dramatically reduced gun ownership and the incidence of mass shootings.
