Relieve Neck Pain & Tension with These 6 Yoga Poses
Do you experience persistent neck pain or stiffness? You’re not alone. Many of us carry tension in our necks due to stress, poor posture, and prolonged screen time. Fortunately,yoga offers a gentle yet effective approach to alleviate discomfort and restore freedom of movement.
This sequence focuses on opening the chest, shoulders, and upper back – areas directly linked to neck health. Regularly practicing these poses can improve your posture, release muscle tension, and ultimately, ease your neck pain. Let’s begin!
1. Supported Bridge Pose (Setu Bandhasana)
Supported Bridge Pose gently opens the chest and encourages proper spinal alignment. This counteracts the forward-rounding ofen associated with neck strain.
How to:
- lie on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor, hip-width apart.
- Press your feet into the floor and lift your hips up, creating a gentle curve in your spine.
- Slide a yoga block (or firm cushion) under your sacrum (the flat bone at the base of your spine) for support.
- Relax your arms alongside your body, palms facing down.
- Stay here for 1-3 minutes, breathing deeply and evenly.
2. Thread the Needle Pose (Urdhva mukha Paschimottanasana Variation)
Thread the Needle Pose creates a gentle twist, releasing tension in the upper back and shoulders. This release directly impacts the muscles supporting your neck.
How to:
- Start on your hands and knees, ensuring your shoulders are stacked over your wrists and your hips over your knees.
- Inhale deeply, then exhale and thread your right arm under your left arm, bringing your right shoulder and the side of your head to the mat.
- Extend your left arm overhead or wrap it around your waist.
- Hold for 5-8 breaths, then repeat on the other side.
3. Fish Pose (Matsyasana)
Fish Pose is a restorative backbend that counteracts the effects of slouching. It opens the throat and chest, promoting better posture and relieving neck compression.
How to:
- Lie on your back with your legs extended and your arms alongside your body, palms facing down.
- Press your elbows into the floor and lift your chest, gently arching your back.
- Allow your head to rest on the floor, keeping your crown pointing towards the ceiling.
- Stay here for 1-3 minutes, breathing steadily and deeply.
4. Eagle Arms (Garudasana arms)
Eagle Arms stretch the upper back and shoulders, improving posture and supporting the neck. As tension releases, your neck muscles can better maintain an upright position.
How to:
- Sit comfortably or kneel.
- Reach both arms forward at shoulder height.
- Cross one arm under the other, wrapping them so the backs of your hands or palms touch.
- Lift your elbows slightly and slide your shoulder blades down your back.
- Keep your neck long and jaw relaxed for 5-8 breaths, then switch the crossing of your arms.
5. Cow Face Arms (Gomukhasana Arms)
Cow Face Arms enhance shoulder mobility, preventing the neck from compensating for tightness. Increased shoulder range of motion translates to a more relaxed neck.
How to:
- Sit comfortably.
- Lift your right arm by your ear, bending your elbow so your palm faces away from you and your hand moves toward your upper back.
- Bring your left arm behind your back, bending your elbow with your palm facing away from you.
- Reach toward your right hand, using a strap or towel if needed.
- Avoid jutting your ribcage forward and keep your chin parallel to the floor for 5-8 breaths, then switch sides.
