Kansas Assistant Coach Suspended Following DUI Arrest
Joe Dooley, a long-time assistant coach for the Kansas Jayhawks men’s basketball team, has been suspended for three weeks following his arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident. The announcement came Sunday from head coach Bill Self, who emphasized the seriousness of the situation.
Self stated that Dooley demonstrated poor judgment and has fully accepted responsibility for his actions. He also expressed Dooley’s remorse and apology for the incident.
Dooley, 60, boasts a lengthy and varied career in college basketball. He’s served on the Kansas staff during two separate tenures under Bill Self, beginning in 2003 when Self arrived in Lawrence.
Before returning to Kansas, Dooley held several prominent positions:
* He was an assistant at South Carolina.
* He served as both an assistant and head coach at east Carolina for a combined eight years.
* He also spent time at new Mexico and Wyoming.
* Notably, he led Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) following their memorable “Dunk City” Sweet 16 run.
During his five seasons at FGCU, Dooley consistently achieved success, winning 20 or more games each year. However, his second stint at east Carolina ended in 2022 after four seasons, leading him back to Kansas to rejoin Self’s program.
this suspension comes as the Jayhawks prepare for a busy stretch of games. Currently holding a 9-3 record, Kansas will host Davidson on Monday. Then,they’ll kick off Big 12 conference play on January 3rd with an away game against UCF.
