Iraq Embarks on New Era with UN Sustainable Progress framework, Marking End of UNAMI Mission
For over two decades, the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) has been a vital partner in Iraq’s journey toward stability and recovery. Now, a meaningful transition is underway. iraq is stepping into a new phase of self-reliance, marked by the signing of a landmark Sustainable Development Cooperation framework with the United nations. This signals the natural conclusion of UNAMI’s mandate on December 31st, and a shift towards a long-term partnership focused on sustainable growth.

“Signing the Framework is a natural and honourable transition,” explains UNAMI chief Mohamed Al Hassan. It represents a move from supporting political stabilization to fostering a sustainable development partnership between iraq and the UN.This change underscores the significant progress Iraq has made, especially in achieving greater stability after years of conflict.
Understanding the Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework
To achieve the aspiring 2030 Agenda – encompassing the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – nations require both global collaboration and focused national action. Sustainable Development Cooperation Frameworks are designed to provide that national roadmap.these agreements between the UN and individual governments offer the tools needed for planning, implementation, and monitoring progress toward the SDGs.
The Iraq framework prioritizes four key strategic areas, aligning directly with the country’s national development plan:
- Enhanced Social Services: Improving access to quality education, healthcare, and essential social services for all citizens.
- Economic prospect: creating jobs and fostering sustainable economic growth across diverse sectors.
- Environmental Stewardship: Protecting Iraq’s environment and proactively addressing the challenges of climate change.
- Good Governance & Rule of Law: strengthening institutions, promoting clarity, and upholding the rule of law.
How Will This Framework Be Implemented?
Success hinges on collaborative oversight and accountability. A steering committee, co-chaired by Iraq’s Ministry of Planning and the UN Resident Coordinator, will guide the framework’s implementation, monitoring, and reporting.
Here’s how the process will work:
